(Saint-Marcellin 1823–1881 Paris) Esther before Ahasuerus, signed, dated Hugues Merle.1875, oil on canvas, 145 x 95.5 cm, framed Provenance: William Schaus Art Gallery, New York, 1877; Collection of Percy Avery Rockefeller (1878–1934) and Isabel Goodrich Rockefeller, née Stillman (1876–1935); Their sale, Parke-Bernet Galleries, New York, 24 March 1938, lot 25; Collection of Hubert Faure (1919–2021), Paris. Catalogued in: The New York Times, New Paintings at Schaus, 2 April 1877, p. 4. Compare: Huges Merle, Queen Esther 1875, oil on canvas, 78 x 68 cm, private collection. We are grateful to Catherine Polnecq for her assistance with cataloguing the present lot. The painting depicts Esther before King Ahasuerus, who lived in the 5th century BC. The orphaned young Jewish woman was renowned for her great beauty. She was the wife of the Persian king Ahasuerus, with whom she tried to intercede for the fate of her people, who were condemned to death by a close royal adviser. Esther risked death by appearing before the king without an invitation, and fainted at his feet in fear. The king, moved by this spectacle, granted his pardon and clemency to all the Jews of Persia. Hugues Merle paints Esther frozen for a few moments before she loses her balance. The young woman’s distress is palpable. Her gaze is distant. She tries for a moment to loosen the transparent veil covering her head and neck, as she tries to stop herself from falling by grabbing a colourful hanging. Her clothes are adorned with gems and jewels, while the dark silhouette of the king seated on his throne stands out in the background. He is holding a sceptre which will symbolise forgiveness when it touches Esther. He wears a precious royal crown, high and pointed at its tip. This painting is part of a cycle of works devoted to Old Testament heroines that Hugues Merle painted for the American market from the 1870s onwards. The New York dealer P. Avery and his associate George Lucas, the latter living in Paris, regularly commissioned preparatory studies from the artist with a view to optioning a larger format. There is a smaller preparatory work for Queen Esther, 1875, in a private collection. This painting was commissioned from the artist to suit the tastes of the great American collectors, who were becoming increasingly numerous at the time.

      Est: $25,000 - $35,000

Hugues Merle (French, 1823-1881) Couronne de fleurs des champs (Crown of field flowers) Oil on canvas 45-5/8 x 35 inches (115.9 x 88.9 cm) Signed and indistinctly dated lower left: Hugues Merle / 18... Titled on the stretcher: Couronne de fleurs des champs PROVENANCE: Private collection; Private collection, Illinois, acquired from the above, 1961. One of the pillars of French academic painting, Hugues Merle enjoyed great acclaim during his lifetime. Idealized depictions of family life, exemplified in the present work, were a mainstay in Merle's oeuvre, and comprised many of his successful Salon entries from the 1840s to the 1860s. His mastery is expressed in the exquisite handling of each element, from landscape to skin, but especially so in the drapery and its relationship to the underlying forms concealed beneath it. Est: $40,000 - $60,000

Hugues Merle (French, 1822-1881) Couronne de Fleurs des Champs (Field Flower Wreath) Signed and dated 'Hugues.Merle./1880' bottom left; also pencil inscribed with title on stretcher verso, oil on canvas 45 5/8 x 35 in. (115.9 x 88.9cm) Provenance Private Collection, Illinois. Footnote: Note Born in Saint Marcellin, Hughes Merle attended the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. There, he was under the tutelage of Léon Cogniet, who encouraged him to exhibit in the 1847 Paris Salon – his first of many Salon exhibitions. Merle is highly regarded for his meticulous, sensitive, and tender depictions of a variety of subjects, including literary, allegorical, and historical themes, and above all, for his paintings of domestic and female subjects – including the theme of mother and child, as in the present work. Introduced to the famed fellow French painter William-Adolphe Bouguereau by the art dealer Paul Durand-Ruel, Merle became a great influence on his younger counterpart, and the two artists soon became rivals. With paintings in major collections, Merle remains well known today for his ability to successfully capture the human form with technical brilliance and lyricism.

1. L. Est: $12,000 - $18,000

HUGUES MERLE (French, 1823-1881) Mary Magdalene in the Cave, 1868 Oil on canvas 17-3/4 x 23-1/2 inches (45.1 x 59.7 cm) Signed and dated lower left: Hugues Merle 1868 PROVENANCE: Private collection, Amsterdam. The French academic painter Hugues Merle gained acclaim during his lifetime for his idealized depictions of family life and of historical and religious subjects. He was often associated with his friend and rival, William-Adolphe Bouguereau; in fact, their shared dealer, Paul Durand-Ruel, urged Bouguereau to add to his pictorial repertoire Merle's interpretation of familial love, which had defined his most successful Salon entries during the 1840s through the 1960s. Whether imaging modern-day Madonnas with children, Susanna at her bath, or, as here, Mary Magdelene, Merle favored emotion-filled, often seductive, facial expressions and languid bodies to connote drama and pathos. Indeed, his Mary Magdelene emerges as the enraptured captive of Christ's love. The Musée du Luxembourg, Paris, Wallace Collection, London, and Metropolitan Museum, New York are among the institutions featuring Merle's finest works.
