Ca. 1876. Collotype. 20 x 12,5 cm. Inscribed and monogr. AM, matted and framed under glass, uninspected out of frame. - M. is the most important German realist painter of the 19th cent. He was trained in the lithographic workshop of his father, a business he took over at the age of 16 when his father died; he didn't continue a short study at the Berlin academy in 1833. M. had his artistic breakthrough in 1842 with a cycle of illustrations for F. Th. Kuglers 'Geschichte Friedrichs des Großen' (Story of Frederick the Great) and became one of the most sought-after artists of his time. Among his numerous honours was the Order of the Black Eagle and his ennoblement in 1898. In 1867 he exhibited at the Paris World's Fair, also in Paris was shown a retrospective of his works in 1885 on the occasion of his 70th birthday. By order of emperor Wilhelm II. he was given a state funeral. M.'s fame as a realist is based on the precise and virtuosic depiction of past and contemporary incidents. Besides paintings from the life of Frederick the Great which made M. known as the painter of Old Prussia he is mostly renowned for scenes from the every-day life of the most different people and situations like noble balls, beer gardens or factories; the 'Iron Rolling Mill' is the most famous among them. The image sections of his paintings, often seemingly chosen haphazardly as well as the persons not interacting illustrate the lack of relationship of metropolitan life. Some of his paintings anticipating impressionism and even abstraction contribute to his importance as a most important protagonist of artistic innovation in Germany. Mus.: Berlin (Nat.-Gal.), Hamburg (Kunsthalle), Dresden, München, Köln, Wien a. others. Lit.: Thieme-Becker, Bénézit, Schmidt: A. M. - Zeichnungen, Busch: A. M. - Leben udn Werk a. others.

                  Est: €1,500 - €1,800

Erinnerungskizzen entliehener Zeichnungen Zimmermannsbleistift auf Velin, aufgezogen. 20 x 12,2 cm. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalogue.

- Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalogue.

                  Menzel, Adolph von

                  Est: €6,000 - €8,000

Pen in black, grey wash/cardboard, signed upper left. Preparatory drawing to the series of 30 illustrations for Heinrich von Kleists edition of Der zerbrochene Krug. Mit 30 Illustrationen und 4 Photographien nach Original-Compositionen von Adolph Menzel, Berlin, A. Hofmann & Co., 1877. Southern German private collection. Menzel normally drew directly on the woodblock, so that his drawing was lost when cutting. But for nine of the illustrations for the comedy Der zerbrochene Krug, he tried out a new method: transferring a pen and ink drawing on white paper to the woodblock by means of photography. The results were disappointing, however, so he returned to the well-tried method. This is documented by a report he wrote himself on the creation of this series of illustrations, which also lists the individual sheets in question, including the headpiece for the Second Act. So far, two of these nine pen and ink drawings have been documented; this one is now the third. We are grateful to Dr. Claude Keisch, Berlin, for helpful information and for confirming the drawing's authenticity on the basis of photographs.
