Menton, Mary Theresa. Towers of Capistrano. (1847-1913) Mary T. Menton was born in Boston but moved to California as a child. In 1870 she settled in San Francisco and studied at The School of Design and privately with William Keith where later they had studios next door to each other on Pine Street. The 1906 San Francisco earthquake destroyed her studio and much of her works. Devastated, she went to live in Mexico for two years, painted some, then returned to San Francisco until her death. Menton, a celebrated California artist, whose works are considered rare. Offered here is an oil on canvas mounted on board. She has signed in lower left her name and dated 1906. On the right, something very difficult to make out but appears to be "Towers of Capistrano". Canvas and panel measure 11 x 21 1/4" magnificently framed in a vintage, century-old, gilt wood frame of exceptional craftsmanship to 15 x 25 1/2". The Arden Family Holdings of Beverly HIlls.
