With the strong focus on portraits of world icons as the focal point, Stephen Menon's creations revisit historical events that have shaped the region's development and modern society. Stephen's refined compositions using the medium of screenprint and oil painting transforms distinct elements into a visually stimulating narrative. Imbued with a sense of story, this work from the Lee Kuan Yew series incorporates elements from a renowned local myth: Singapura Dilanggar Todak with vintage posters of the Ringling Bros, and Barnum & Bailey travelling circus rendered in bright, captivating colours. In the present lot, the founder of modern Singapore, Lee Kuan Yew is positioned enigmatically, strengthened by a cinematic expression of light and shadow. This work is an expressive and particularly polished piece, demonstrating Stephen’s observations on the golden era of local film. Stephen Menon is a painter and printmaker. He graduated with a Diploma in Graphic Design from Kuala Lumpur College of Art in 1993. He majored in printmaking and minored in painting and drawing. The culmination of Stephen’s artistic career began when he started to explore screen printings and improvised on techniques that pushed the boundaries of traditional printmaking. Working on a myriad of themes for his works from socio-political, satires and spirituality, Stephen’s works were very well received and had won innumerable accolades both locally and internationally. His thought provoking and avant-garde prints are most talked about amongst the art elites and the most sought after in the auctions. Stephen was a resident artist at a local prestigious university (University of Malaya) and he has exhibited in numerous international shows. Stephen has received many international art awards which includes the Excellent Award, Portrait Society of America, USA, 2016, Honorable Mention International Portrait Competition – Portrait Society of America, 2016 and 2017, Honorable Mention, International Printmaking and Paper Art Show 2018, Indonesia, Honorable Mention On Paper Contest Printmaking, Spain 2019, Honorable Mention, 20th International Print Biennial Varna, Bulgaria 2019, Honorable Mention, and 7th NBC Meshtech Tokyo International Screen Print Biennial. Artist-curator Stephen Menon has done a suit of works on Malaysian icons such as Tan Sri P. Ramlee (1929-1973), Tunku Abdul Rahman (1903-1990) and Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad (b.1925). In his series on Tun Dr. Mahathir, he had done 15, all in different colour schemes. Tun Dr. Mahathir was Malaysia’s longest serving Prime Minister, from 1981 to 2003, and he is now the world’s oldest Prime Minister when he assumed office as the 7th Prime Minister on May 10, 2018. Whereas he previously headed Umno, he now heads Parti Pribumi Bersatu which he founded, and Pakatan Harapan. As 4th Prime Minister, he served under six monarchs, and was instrumental in the Multimedia Super Corridor, National Car Project (Proton), North-South Highway, Petronas Twin Towers, KLIA, and the Formula One Circuit in Sepang. The Tun Dr. Mahathir works were shown in the Wawasan 2020 — The Malaysian Dream exhibition in Singapore in 2012. Stephen Menon graduated with a Diploma in Graphic Design from the Kuala Lumpur College of Art in 1993, after which he was mentored for a time under Amron Omar. He was the Universiti Malaya resident artist and has had five solo exhibitions.

"Born in Pahang, Stephen Menon graduated with a Diploma in Graphic Design from Kuala Lumpur College of Art in 1993.
