      Dutch conductor (1871-1951) highly regarded for his interpretations of Bach and the late Romantic repertoire. The extent of his cooperation with the Nazi regime during World War II remains a topic of much controversy and discussion. Matte-finish 2.5 x 4 photo, affixed to a 3.5 x 4.75 mount, which is in turn affixed to a 6.25 x 8 gray mount, signed on the gray mount in black ink, "W. Mengelberg, Maart 1910." Some scattered light foxing to mounts and image, and surface of larger mount peeling at lower right corner, otherwise fine condition.

      WILLEM MENGELBERG (1871-1951) Acclaimed Dutch conductor, especially remembered for his interpretations of Gustav Mahler. I.S.P. 8" x 10" b/w, showing Mengelberg in a close-up portrait, inscribed at top margin in German to Mr. Zylstra, adding date July 1, 1936. Inscription in a darker portion to Anthony Zylstra, the son-in-law of Nicholas, Grand Duke of Russia, husband of his daughter Irina Orlov. Signature is good. Simply framed in wood. A crease at left margin, slight skipping to ink, otherwise very good condition, unexamined out of frame. $75-100
