      Est: -

MIGUEL JACINTO MELÉNDEZ Oviedo 1679 - Madrid 1734 Portrait of Philip V inserted in an oval Oil on canvas Measurements 69.5 x 59.5 cm < br> Miguel Jacinto Meléndez, Painter of the King, made various official portraits of Felipe V and his wife Isabel de Farnesio that were widely disseminated during the reign of both monarchs. These official portraits belong to a large group of similar paintings that Meléndez painted from the second half of the century, whose final destination was usually institutional or religious headquarters, such as the Royal Academy of San Fernando or the cathedral of Burgo de Osma. The king shows a young but slightly idealized face, he wears a cuirass, over a dress with wide sleeves, and wears a white collar and tie; His chest is crossed by the band of the order of Saint-Espirit and he wears the collar of the Order of the Golden Fleece. The work shows that vaporous, loose and brilliant brushstroke without giving up the psychological introspection of the character. . These portraits derive from a first portrait that is probably the same one kept by the Prado Museum, which may date from the years 1718-1722.

Circle of MIGUEL JACINTO MELÉNDEZ (Oviedo, 1679-Madrid, 1734), 19th century. "Luis I de Borbón". Oil on canvas. Re-drawn. Frame of the 19th century. Measurements: 81 x 58 cm; 102,5 x 81 cm (frame). Portrait of Louis I, with oval representation of the figure of the young king in half profile, dressed in a grey coat covered with sumptuous golden brocade. He wears his characteristic long-haired powdered wig. He holds an official document in his left hand and a golden sceptre in his right. The use of light emphasises the whiteness of the flesh tones and the velvety reflections of the drapery. Stylistically, it follows models by Miguel Jacinto Meléndez, by whom several portraits of this same monarch are preserved. Louis I, son of Philip V and Maria Luisa Gabriela of Savoy, acceded to the throne after his father's abdication at the early age of 16. His rule was very short-lived, as he died of smallpox a few months later in 1724. Miguel Jacinto Meléndez would give birth to a whole family of artists, to which his brother and nephew, Luis Meléndez, one of the most important still-life painters of the 18th century, would belong. Born in the 17th century, the Spanish Golden Age, he moved to Madrid at the end of the century, where he studied in the studio of José García Hidalgo, who had been a disciple of Carreño de Miranda. Miguel Jacinto was soon able to consolidate his role as a court portraitist thanks to the death of the last Baroque painters of the Hapsburg court: Carreño de Miranda, Francisco Rizzi and Francisco de Herrera. Luca Giordano's return to Italy also helped to consolidate this position. In 1712 he completed the portraits of Philip V, Maria Luisa Gabriela of Savoy and the heir to the throne, Louis, which earned him the title of honorary painter to the king. This latter status, that of honorary, entailed the absence of a fixed salary, although this would change in 1727, probably thanks to the completion of the outstanding series of portraits of Philip V's family for the Royal Library. Despite the absence of a fixed salary until that date, the painter managed to win the favour of the powerful and soon achieved a comfortable economic and social position. The last portrait signed by the painter was that of the monarch's second wife, Isabella of Farnese, in 1727, and it seems that after that date he never again painted portraits of the royal family. In addition to portraiture, the painter also devoted himself to religious painting, receiving commissions from various churches and convents. Meléndez's portraits show a discreet elegance, with a great interest in the depiction of clothes and jewels that add sumptuousness and sophistication to the image. In addition, his models often present a melancholic and pensive aura.

      Est: €7,000 - €9,000

Circle of MIGUEL JACINTO MELÉNDEZ (Oviedo, 1679-Madrid, 1734). "Portrait of a Lady. Oil on copper. Measurements: 7,5 x 5,5 cm; 16,5 x 15 cm (frame). Portrait of a lady with a long bust. The woman appears in the foreground, turned in three quarters on a neutral background that monumentalises the figure. The woman, who is looking directly at the viewer, is holding something in her hand, which could be a fan, thus adding a certain dynamism to the scene. She is also accessorised with earrings and a pendant in the form of a gold cross set with diamonds, as well as a bracelet with several strands of pearls, a material associated with nobility and of high economic value. The headdress is decorated with an ornate headdress, with a comb that is arranged next to the high bun. This feature makes it easier to date the piece, as it was a very fashionable hairstyle during the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Both her gaze and the half-smile she wears show a connection of complicity with the viewer. This characteristic makes the image a psychological portrait, avoiding superfluous details and focusing attention on the essential. Miguel Jacinto Meléndez would give birth to a whole family of artists, to which his brother and nephew, Luis Meléndez, one of the most important still-life painters of the 18th century, would belong. Of the set of portraits that are conserved of the first wife of Felipe V the one that occupies us can be related to a version located in a private collection in Madrid. Unlike the latter, the portrait shows a beautiful bouquet of flowers and an elegant dress in keeping with her royal status. These unpublished portraits of Felipe V and María Luisa Gabriela de Saboya are an important contribution to the set of portraits belonging to the first marriage of the first king of the House of Bourbon in Spain. Of the set of portraits that are conserved of the royal couple, the latter have the particularity of being the first because they show both kings at an early age. Possibly they were made during the first years of their marriage, back in 1701. Although there are discrepancies of opinions about their authorship, both portraits, despite the rusty varnish they present, let us glimpse some works of great quality.
