Hita von Mende Sold at Auction Prices

Hita von Mende paints images of the West in a contemporary style. Many of Hita von Mende’s oil paintings are about the American West--the cowboys, the cowgirls, the ranchers, horses, cattle, coyotes, eagles, landscapes, wind farms and myths--the romance and drama of the West, a dynamic space where heroism is both epic and everyday. Another great source of inspiration is Puget Sound--ships, ports, and great industrial sites. She works and lives on Vashon Island where she and her family are finding out how addictive raising foals can be.

Barge on the River, by Hita von Mende

      Est: $2,250 - $2,750

"I am fascinated by urban landscapes. For this painting I did a number of sketches in oil, standing along the river’s edge. It is amazing what the hand seems to see that I would never see in a photograph. In my studio, the sketch and the colors in it help me compose a painting that expresses the beauty of the day, the river, the shapes of the buildings and the awesome power of industrial activity. The smokestacks and pilings lend vertical strength to the painting and the flowing plumes from the smokestacks are white and black, perhaps good and bad, but beautiful. The red door on the barge reminds me that there are people here too." -H.V.M.

Urban Hideaway: Boat Houses, by Hita von Mende

      Est: $725 - $775

"The Duwamish is an industrial river, but hidden away among the manufacturing plants along the river I found these boat houses. You can not see them from the bridge above, or the streets nearby. But here they are, ready for someone to leave the bustle and get in their fishing boat. The contrast of the surroundings and the boat houses echoed in the colors, soft for the sky and water, sharp-edged and strong for the buildings." -H.V.M.
