Milton Menasco - EXTERMINATOR (OLD BONES)

        Est: $3,000 - $5,000

Oil on canvas Signed, inscribed "Old Bones" on the stretcher Exterminator was foaled at Almahurst Farm, but there is great speculation as to which member of the Knight family was his breeder. Exterminator was never considered a great beauty. He passed through the Saratoga yearling sales with little fanfare and was described by his buyer, trainer J. Calvin Milam, as "too lean and growthy." Even though his sire, McGee, had sired the Kentucky Derby winner Donerail just two years before Exterminator's birth, Exterminator was so lanky and coarse as a 2-year-old that he was gelded. Despite this, the horse formed the basis of Milam's success at Merrick Place Farm (his manor house still stands today as Lexington's Merrick Inn). By the end of his eight-year career, Exterminator had earned the nickname "Old Bones" because of his bony, aged appearance. But beauty is as beauty does, and Exterminator won 50 of his 99 starts, including the 1918 Kentucky Derby. Exterminator was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1957, the first gelding to receive the honor. Milton Talbot Menasco (1890 - 1974) Indian on Horseback Pastel on Board. Milton was an American painter and art director of silent movies. Born in 1890 in Los Angeles, California, Menasco began his art career in the early days of Hollywood, when his "blood and thunder" posters enticed movie fans into theaters to watch the first silent pictures. He was commissioned to do mural paintings at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco for the World's Fair in 1915. After the war, Menasco moved to Kentucky to devote himself entirely to his real love, horse portraiture. Here he painted the equine racing greats of the nation and helped with art direction at the Thoroughbred Record and Sporting News. He and his wife purchased a farm where an old brick house built in the 18th century served for many years as his studio. Horsemen admired the richness and feeling reflected in Menasco's paintings, and his clients included John Hay Whitney, Isabel Dodge Sloane, President Ronald Reagan and Allaire du Pont. One of his first large paintings was for Lucille Markey depicting nine of her horses at Calumet Farm, including Citation, Coaltown and others grouped in the track with exercise boys up. Menasco also painted Secretariat for owner Penny Chenery. A distinguishing mark of Menasco's paintings is the detail to sky and landscape backgrounds. Man o’ War was a chestnut colt by Fair Play out of the Rock Sand daughter Mahubah, born in 1917. Bred by August Belmont Jr., he sold as a yearling in Saratoga for $5,000 and was purchased by Samuel D. Riddle. He is perhaps the best-known horse of the 20th century. He won all but one of his 21 starts, losing only once at Saratoga, fittingly to a colt named Upset. Ten days later Man o’ War beat Upset by a length in the Grand Union Hotel Stakes. Milton Menasco painted him here as a 2-year-old, going to post in the 1919 Belmont Futurity, Man o’ War’s ninth career win. Man o’ War was regarded as the most outstanding 2-year- old male of 1919. Man o’ War had as much success as a stallion as he did as a racehorse. He was the leading North American sire in 1926 and runner-up for the title in 1928, ’29, and ’37. He started his stud duties at Hinata Farm outside Lexington, which was managed by Elizabeth Daingerfield. The next year, he was moved to Riddle’s new farm, Faraway Farm (currently Mt. Brilliant Farm). Here, Man o’ War became a Kentucky tourist attraction.

Desert Trial went on to a very successful race career for Mrs. Adams, winning 11 of 31 starts, including the Del Mar Oaks and Ramona Handicap at 3. As a 4-yearold she was ranked amongst the top four older fillies and mares after winning five major stakes, including the Hollywood Ladies Handicap, the Milady Handicap, and a second Ramona Handicap. Menasco, Milton - Miche at the Start of...

        Est: $6,000 - $8,000

Miche at the Start of the Santa Anita Handicap , 1952 Imported from Argentina in 1947, Miche was part of a fourhorse package purchased by Muriel Vanderbilt Adams. The handsome gray became a favorite of Mrs. Adams, an American socialite and Thoroughbred owner and breeder known for her devotion to her horses. Miche proved very successful, winning 15 of 51 starts. He is shown here being readied for the Santa Anita Handicap with jockey John Covalli wearing the white and black-bar-on-sleeve silks that Mrs. Adams inherited from her grandfather, William K. Vanderbilt. The race was anything but easy. Miche and the major stakes winner Intent made simultaneous moves on the backstretch, with Miche on the rail. From the three-sixteenths pole onward, Intent and jockey Jack Westrope brushed, bumped, and finally slammed Miche against the rail, beating him by a length. With the use of the film patrol, the stewards disqualified Intent and named Miche the winner of the $100,000 event.

        Est: $6,000 - $8,000

PLAY HANDS The career of Play Hands may very well illustrate the racehorse phrase "hard-knocking." The 1941 chestnut daughter of twiceleading sire Chance Play was bred by Horatius P. Mason, who consigned her to the 1942 Saratoga yearling sale where she failed to sell. She made her first start on January 29, 1943, at the Fair Grounds in New Orleans, Louisiana for owners H. & C. Kirkpatrick. Through claims she ended her career with owner Mrs. J. L. Chesney and trainer J. L. Chesney on March 6, 1951, at Oaklawn Park in Arkansas. In all, Play Hands started 198 times in nine years, winning 30 and placing another 52 times. As a sophomore filly, she won 10 of 33 starts. Haden Kirkpatrick owned The Thoroughbred Record, where Menasco worked as an illustrator. This painting was a gift from Menasco to his good friend Kirkpatrick.

        Menasco, Milton - Nashua

        Est: $6,000 - $8,000

NASHUA Nashua, trained by the legendary "Sunny" Jim Fitzsimmons, won the 1956 Widener Handicap at Hialeah Park with Eddie Arcaro up. P.A.B. Widener III (1925-1999) attended the race with Leslie Combs, II, owner of Spendthrift Farm, who had just leased Nashua to race under Spendthrift silks, and later to stand at stud at Spendthrift. After the race, Widener and Combs commissioned Menasco to paint almost identical paintings of Nashua with Arcaro up along with the three outstanding runners up from this race in the background. Besides Nashua, depicted in the background are Social Outcast, who placed and is depicted as the riderless chestnut; Sailor, who showed and is the chestnut on the left; and Find, who finished fourth and is the bay. Widener's grandfather, Joseph Early Widener, had purchased and renovated Hialeah in 1930.
