      • Sleeping Child Jesus by Pedro de Mena

Sleeping Child Jesus by Pedro de Mena

        Est: €20,000 - €40,000

Pedro de Mena y Medrano (Granada 1628 Malaga 1688) "Sleeping Child Jesus" Carved, polychrome wood sculpture with vitreous paste eyes. Pedro de Mena is one of the most important and representative artists of the Spanish Baroque. He made different versions of Jesus the Child lying down, in the arms of his mother or of Saint Joseph, as part of the Holy Family, standing, individually or as a couple with his cousin Saint John. Surely the carving would go on a cross as usual in the iconography of the sleeping Child Jesus, which develops and expands after the Council of Trent. This iconography comes from several previously consolidated models that are quickly revealed through engravings during the Renaissance, which collect the classic tradition of the Sleeping Eros, a theme linked to death since ancient times and associated with infant graves. Another model is the vanitas Nascendo Morimor (when we are born we die), which also comes from classical authors and which reflects on the fact that from the moment of birth we begin to die. Another source of inspiration would be the Virgin of Silence where some of the members of the Sagrada Famiia observe the Child sleeping. This iconography invited recollection and deep reflection through a friendly aesthetic, without falling into the drama or the macabre. Although it was not finally granted, this piece was requested to be part of the "Pedro de Mena, Granatensis Malacae" Exhibition held at the Ars Málaga-Palacio Episcopal de Málaga exhibition halls from March 15 to March 14. July 2019, curated by José Luís Romero Torres. Provenance: Private collection Alicante Length: 58 cms.
