Hans Memling Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Flower painter, b. 1440 - d. 1494

(born c. 1435-1440 Seligenstadt, Germany; died 11 August 1494 Bruges, Belgium) Flemish painter. Influenced by the work of Jan van Eyck and Rogier van der Weyden, Hans Memling was one of the leading Flemish painters of the 15th century. Little is known about his life, but he was likely an apprentice to Rogier van der Weyden in Brussels. Around 1465 Memling moved to Bruges, where he painted for the Flemish upper class and the Italian merchants who lived in the area. His work mainly consisted of religious paintings commissioned for private devotion; often with the patron shown praying towards the Virgin and Child. Memling is well known for his portraiture as well, catering to the tastes of his Italian patrons in which he painted increasingly secular portraits with humanist leanings that emphasized the wealth of the patron rather than his piety. The backgrounds of his portraits transformed through his career; from monochrome interior backdrops to landscapes where the subject is seated in nature. While Memling is not the first artist to make this transition, he is well known for his naturalist style and painting bust length compositions, not common at the time. An established artist by his thirties, Memling was able to garner respect not only from within Flanders but also in Renaissance Italy.

      Est: €5,000 - €6,000

HANS MEMLING (1430-1494) (His circle) Flemish school, first half of the 16th century The presentation of Mary at the Temple, Oil on panel, first half of the 16th century. An antique tag on the back reads: "This painting was painted by Memling in 1478 for his sister, a nun at the Saint Esprit convent in Bruges, where it was conserved until their eradication, and hidden by a religious woman who later sold it". The existence of the Saint Esprit convent or cloister in Bruges was first mentioned in 1236. It was located on Saint-Esprit street (now Goezeputstraat). After 1380, it was occupied by the nuns of the third order of Saint Francis. The convent was closed in 1796 by the revolutionary authorities. The work was analysed extensively by Iparc in 2019, with the following conclusion: "With this information along with the iconography and the art historical findings we can conclude that this painting most likely dates from the first half of the 16th century." A copy of IPARC's report from September of 2019 will be made available to the buyer. Height (cm) : 39,8 - Width (cm) : 31,2 - -

      Dec. 09, 2019

      HANS MEMLING (1430/40-1494)

      Est: €1,500 - €2,000

HANS MEMLING (1430/40-1494) Man of Sorrows. Panel. Wax seal on the reverse. Severy restorations, worm holes. Late 15th century copy, probably by an Italian artist. The southern wood type confirms this hypothesis. The frequently copied original painting by Hans Memling, to be dated around ca. 1480-1490, is part of the collection of the Galleria di Palazzo Biano in Genova (panel, 53.4 x 39.1 cm, inv./cat.nr P.B. 1569). One of these copies, which is very close to the original but also to the present painting (concerning the hands) is now attributed to an anonymous Italian master from the last quarter of the 15th century (panel, 54.3 x 33.6 cm, inv./cat.nr cat. 1176a, Philadephia Museum of Art, Philadelphia). To be mentioned lastly is a copy in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Strasbourg, where a landscape has been added in the background (panel, 56 x 40 cm, inv.nr. MBA 186 ; 44.R.309). This version has been conserved together with its pendant depicting Our Lady and is currently attributed to the master of the Campana cassoni, identified as Antonio di Jacopo Gallo (or 'Gallo Fiorentino'), who worked in Florence between 1503 and 1527. 58 x 36.5 cm (78 x 57 cm) HANS MEMLING (1430/40-1494) Man van Smarten. Paneel. 1176a, Philadephia Museum of Art, Philadelphia). 1176a, Philadephia Museum of Art, Philadelphia).
