      Est: £200 - £300

The battle of French and Italian opera.- [Grimm (Friedrich Melchior)] Le Petit Prophète de Boehmischbroda, etched frontispiece depicting a violinist in his dilapidated garret, little water-staining at head, some spotting, 19th century sheep-backed marbled boards, [Paris], [no printer], 1753; and 2 others, Music and Goldoni, 8vo (3) ⁂ One of the most lively and amusing contributions to the 'Guerre des Bouffons', which was sparked by performances in Paris of Pergolesi's Serva Padrona in August, 1752, given by a company of Italian singers. It coincided with a growing demand for more 'natural' performances on the Parisian stage and the success of Platée. A pamphlet war ensued, with the King taking the French side and the Queen the Italian.
