      GEORGE HENRY MELCHER AMERICAN, CALIFORNIA, 1881-1957 COTTAGE IN TOPANGA CANYON, CALIFORNIA - MELCHER'S CABIN Oil on board Lower left signed: Melcher; verso inscribed: Melcher's Cabin in Topanga Canyon / California / by George Melcher Catalogue note: George Henry Melcher was born in Germantown, Pennsylvania. He began drawing at an early age and at 12 years old, began studying painting under a private teacher. At 15 he was selling cartoons to the New York Journal and New York World. After graduation from Germantown High School, he studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts under William Chase, Thomas Anshutz, and Hugh Henry Breckenridge; and at the Rose Valley School near Philadelphia. Due to ill health, he sought a milder climate, and in 1905 he moved to Los Angeles where he established a studio in the cupola of the Methodist Church. In 1907 he homesteaded 120 acres in the Santa Monica Mountains where he painted many canvases of the Topanga Canyon area. Source: Crocker Museum of Art, Sacramento (online)

      (American California 1881-1957) Bright attractive oil on masonite entitled 'Desert Near Palm Springs' according to label to verso. Signed 'George Henry Melcher' LR. SIZE: 16 x 24" overall 21 x 28". Housed in magnificent gilt & brown wood period frame. CONDITION: Very good overall, mild surface grime evident & a few staining spots in places. Colors remain strong, no visible touch ups or restorations. BIO: Melcher, a Master of early California Art, born & studied in Pennsylvania moved to Southern California where he painted landscapes in the Plein Aire tradition using real life surroundings. He became a highly esteemed artist and his works have been exhibited in California including L.A County Museum as well as in museums and galleries in Pennsylvania .
