Leo Meiersdorff Art for Sale at Auction

b. 1934 - d. 1994

Leo Meiersdorff, born in Germany in 1934, studied both music and art at the Berlin Academy of Fine Arts, eventually becoming a master student of Austrian expressionist Oskar Kokoschka. In Berlin he led a jazz combo, and in 1957, Meiersdorff's artwork won a design competition for a poster promoting Jazz at the Philharmonic. His love of jazz led him to visit America, and by 1966, he was a permanent resident, producing Leo Meiersdorff prints for a discerning musical public.

Meiersdorff's paintings began to focus on the people he met in America, and you can find many of his New Orleans watercolors alongside watercolor paintings for sale by his contemporaries. He made a name for himself in his community of musicians who often commissioned him to produce jazz art album covers or backgrounds for their television specials. He lived and worked in New York, Los Angeles, and New Orleans, where he spent 10 years capturing the city's cultural scene. Leo Meiersdorff prints remain popular with collectors around the world.
