    • Joseph Meert (1905-1989) Belgian/ American
      Jul. 20, 2024

      Joseph Meert (1905-1989) Belgian/ American

      Est: $800 - $1,500

Joseph Meert (1905-1989) Ink and watercolor drawing on paper depicting courtroom scene and also painted on verso, signed lower right, piece measures 9 x 16 and 17 x 23 inches framed. A native of Brussels, Belgium, Joseph Meert immigrated to the U.S. with his family in 1910. He studied at the Kansas City Art Institute and with Thomas Hart Benton the Art Students League in New York City. After a year traveling and sketching in Europe, he returned to New York in 1931 and met Jackson Pollock, who was then studying with Benton at the League. The two artists remained close friends, and Meert has been credited with saving Pollock from freezing to death by rescuing him after he fell asleep in a snowdrift on a New York street. Initially a follower of Benton's American Scene aesthetic, in the mid 1940s Meert turned to abstraction, working in oils, watercolor, and stained glass. In 1946 he and his wife, Margaret, joined the Spiral Group, an organization of abstract painters, with whom they exhibited in the 1940s. Meert continued to exhibit in New York City in the 1950s, and in 1964 was awarded a Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation grant for work in stained glass. In later years, medical and financial problems forced the Meerts to move to a nursing home in upstate New York. After his wife's death in 1980, Meert became a ward of the state and was moved to a facility where he was not recognized as an artist. Fortunately, thanks to the intervention of Pollock's biographer, Jeffrey Potter, Meert was awarded one of the first Pollock-Krasner Foundation grants, which enabled him to be moved to a more congenial residence and to work with art therapists to revive his creative life. From 1985-88 he completed a large series of abstract watercolors, of which this is an example. A selection of them was exhibited at the Pollock-Krasner House in 1994.

      Est: $500 - $700

Joseph Meert Belgium / Kansas, Connecticut, (1905 - 1990) abstract, 1935 oil on canvas Signed and dated lower right. Condition: The canvas is in stable condition free from soiling or discoloration. Under examination we found no evidence of inpaint repairs to this work. While it might benefit from a professional cleaning, it is quite stable in it's present state. Biography from the Archives of askART: Joseph Meert, an abstract expressionist and friend of Jackson Pollock actually saved Pollock's life one night. On a sub-zero winter night of 1943 or 1944, Pollock came to visit Meert at his apartment, however Pollock had passed out drunk in a snowdrift and would have frozen to death had it not been for Meert. In the 1920s, he was a resident of Kansas City, Kansas living at 1014 Tenny Street and taught at the Kansas City Art Institute from 1935 - 1941. Despite his extensive exhibition record, Meert never found financial success. In 1980, after the death of his wife, his medical and mental condition began to deteriorate, but he was misdiagnosed with schizophrenia and became a ward of a state nursing home. In 1985, the Pollock-Krasner Foundation awarded a grant to have him transferred to a better facility in Cheshire, CT, where he received art therapy treatment and benefited from this until his death in 1990.

In the 1993 exhibition catalog for Under The Influence: The Students of Thomas Hart Benton at the Albrecht Kemper Museum of Art in St. Joseph, Missouri by Mariane Berardi, she describes Joe Meert as, 'A reticent man, dreamer, who painted beautiful pictures with a poetic brush.' and says that he was .'generally acknowledged to be (one of) Benton's favorite pupils at the Art Student League.' in New York City. At about the time this drawing was done, Meert, 'followed Benton to the Kansas City Art Institute in 1935 where he served as Benton's assistant in the painting department. During his tenure at the Art Institute, Meert produced Post Office murals under the patronage of the WPA in Marceline and Mount Vernon, Missouri and in Spencer, Indiana.' Est: $8,000 - $12,000

Joseph Meert (American/Belgian, 1905-1990) Standing Nude in an Interior, 1941 Oil on canvas 40 x 28 inches (101.6 x 71.1 cm) Signed and dated lower right: Meert 41 PROVENANCE: Sale: Grogan & Company, Dedham, Massachusetts, September 23, 2007, lot 132; Acquired by the present owner from the above. EXHIBITED: Northern Arizona University Art Museum, Flagstaff, Arizona, "Enduring America: Selections from the Collection of Art and Peggy Hittner," April 7 - May 29, 2015. LITERATURE: M. Berardi, Under the Influence: The Students of Thomas Hart Benton, exhibition catalogue, Saint Joseph, Missouri, 1993, p. 113. Joseph John Paul Meert emigrated to the United States from his native Belgium in 1910 with his parents and four siblings, settling in Wyandotte Township, Kansas (on the outskirts of Kansas City) with his aunt and uncle, a truck farmer. Meert studied at the Kansas City Art Institute (1923-26) and then at the Art Students League in New York City (1926-29), where the quiet, unassuming artist came under the influence of Thomas Hart Benton (1889-1975). Meert was a close friend of Charles Pollock (brother of Jackson Pollock), and the two artists were generally acknowledged as Benton's favorite pupils. He returned to the Kansas City Art Institute in 1935, serving as Benton's teaching assistant when his mentor moved there to head the Painting Department. During his tenure at the Art Institute (through 1941), Meert produced paintings and lithographs in the Regionalist style popularized by Benton, favoring rural subject matter, while also executing several W.P.A. mural commissions for post offices in Missouri and Indiana. Meert likely painted Standing Nude in Interior in Kansas City, shortly before relocating to New York City in 1941. While more restrained than his mentor in his portrayal of the figure, the stylistic influence of Benton is clear. His composition, however, is more natural, peaceful and straightforward, lacking the contortions and raw energy characteristic of Benton's work. The artist pays homage to Cézanne by including a Cézanne still life reproduction in the background. HID01801242017

ATTRIB JOSEPH JOHN PAUL MEERT (1905 - 1922) EGG TEMPERA

      Est: $4,000 - $6,000

Circa 1930s egg tempera painting on Masonite panel displayed in a late 19th century 'make-do' frame with the ornate plaster removed from its front surface. At the extreme lower left of the panel is the top 1/3rd of a short simple signature that appears to be 'Meert'. The style and execution are commensurate with a Joseph Meert atribution. Panel measures 27 x 36 inches, frame measures 38 x 46.5 inches. Provenance: this painting served as the 'bar room nude' over the bar of a Kansas City, Kansas night club for nearly 40 years.
