          Est: $20,000 - $30,000

JOHN MECRAY Rhode Island/Pennsylvania, 1938-2017 "Daybreak", 1999, depicting the yacht Coronet in the distance after a night of squalls. Signed lower right. Provenance:An Important Private Collection, Newport, Rhode Island. John Mecray described this painting as, "Dawn breaks as the stately schooner Coronet heads for land and a safe harbor. The majesty of a radiant dawn eclipses an undulating wind-tossed sea; a sea that shows all the telltale signs of a recently passed storm." This was the first (and last) in a new series of paintings by John Mecray. Here the environment dominates the scene as the classic vessel is seen in the far distance. It is a striking departure from Mecray's close-in depictions of yachts and the teeming harbor scenes he is known for. Oil on canvas, 24" x 33". Framed 31" x 40".

JOHN MECRAY Rhode Island/Pennsylvania, 1938-2017 "Coronet". Signed lower right "John Mecray". Titled on frame plaque. After being inspired by a 1980 article in Wooden Boat magazine featuring the languishing schooner Coronet , Mecray set out on a mission to restore the vessel to her original glory. To support these efforts, he painted three oils as well as a set of limited edition prints, of which he donated most of the sale proceeds. Due in large part to Mecray's efforts, the Coronet has been recognized by the National Trust for Historic Preservation and has been called America's "Most Historic Yacht". A full-scale restoration of the Coronet commenced in 2008 at the Newport campus of IYRS School of Technology & Trades. JOHN MECRAY Rhode Island/Pennsylvania, 1938-2017 "Daybreak", 1999, depicting the yacht Coronet in the distance after a night of squalls. Signed lower right. Provenance: An Important Private Collection, Newport, Rhode Island. It is a striking departure from Mecray's close-in depictions of yachts and the teaming harbor scenes he is known for. Oil on canvas, 24" x 33". Framed 31" x 40".

JOHN MECRAY Rhode Island/Pennsylvania, 1937-2017 "Stormy Weather". Signed and dated lower right "John Mecray 2000". Titled on frame plaque. Stormy Weather is a 54-foot ocean racing yawl designed by Olin Stephens of Sparkman & Stephens, launched from the Henry B. Nevins yard in New York on May 14, 1934. She was named after the song written by Harold Arlen and Ted Koehler. Her first owner, Philip LeBoutillier, was president of the Best & Co. department store on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan. An evolution from the Sparkman & Stephens yacht Dorade (1929), Stormy Weather (design #27) was often named by Olin Stephens as one of his favorite designs. In 1935 she won both the Newport to Bergen Transatlantic Race and the Fastnet race. She won the Miami-Nassau Race five times, from 1937 to 1941, under various owners. She has raced continuously to the present day, has crossed the Atlantic 36 times, and has undergone two major restorations. John Mecray chose to depict Stormy Weather in a scene in which, in his words, "the sea and sky dominate the vessel. I wanted her to be skirting bad weather, heading toward a brighter horizon. ... She should be moving purposefully in her element, shouldering a relentless sea, but moving easily." JOHN MECRAY Rhode Island/Pennsylvania, 1937-2017 The Flying Cloud Departs. Signed and dated lower right "John Mecray 1984". In this work, the newly launched Flying Cloud departs her East River berth on her maiden voyage on the morning of June 2, 1851. Under tow by a side-wheeled tug, the clipper was outward bound to San Francisco via Cape Horn. She was designed and built by Donald McKay of East Boston and owned by Grinell, Miturn & Co. of New York. Built for the China Trade, the expectations before her maiden voyage were that she would out-sail any vessel in the world. Under the command of Josiah Creesy, whose reputation as a hard driving captain, and his wife Eleanor Creesy, it came as little surprise that she set a record of 89 days, 21 hours for the 14,000-mile passage. Two years later she would beat her own record by 13 hours, a record that remained until 1989. In 1862, Flying Cloud was sold to the Black Ball Line, Liverpool, sailing under British colors under the same name, traveling between the mother country and Australia and New Zealand. Her latter years were spent in the log trade between Newcastle upon Tyne, England, and Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada. On June 19, 1874, Flying Cloud went ashore on the Beacon Island bar, Saint John, New Brunswick, and was condemned and sold. This lot is being sold to support the endowment of scholarships at IYRS School of Technology and Trades. Oil on canvas, 32" x 50". Framed 38" x 56".

JOHN MECRAY Rhode Island/Pennsylvania, 1937-2017 The American clipper ship Flying Cloud. Signed and dated lower right "John Mecray 1982". Built by Donald McKay in Boston, the extreme clipper Flying Cloud was launched in April 1851 and arrived in New York two weeks later, towed by the tug Ajax . On her first voyage she lost her main and mizzen top gallant masts, but she later became known for making fast passages, including a record 89 days from New York to San Francisco. In 1859 she was engaged to carry troops to London, and her later years were spent in the timber trade. In 1874 she went aground and broke her back, after which she was sold and broken up. In this painting, America's most famous clipper ship makes landfall as her crew shortens sail in a moderate breeze. Her flying jib and royals have been furled and they work on securing the main. This lot is being sold to support the endowment of scholarships at IYRS School of Technology and Trades. Oil on canvas, 20" x 32". Framed.

JOHN MECRAY Rhode Island/Pennsylvania, 1937-2017 The Chase, Shamrock V. Signed and dated lower left "John Mecray 1999". This is the fourth painting of Shamrock V by John Mecray. Here, Mecray depicts Shamrock V sailing downwind in the Solent in her last race before going to America for the 1930 America's Cup, leading King George V's Britannia , with the rest of the "The Big Class" yachts in the distance under the cloud of her tremendous spinnaker. Designed and built by Charles Nicholson at the Camper and Nicholson yard in Gosport, Shamrock V was built with mahogany planking over steel frames and fitted with a hollow spruce mast. As a result of rule changes, she was the first British contender for the America's Cup to carry the Bermuda rig. Following her launch in April 1930 she showed early promise on the British Regatta circuit, winning 15 of 22 races. She underwent continuous improvements, including those to her hull, rudder and rig, before departing to America for the 15th America's Cup. Shamrock V would face the best of four New York syndicates, including Weetamoe , Yankee , Whirlwind and Enterprise . Eventually, Harold Vanderbilt's Enterprise emerged from the competitive round-robins as the chosen defender. Enterprise , skippered by Harold Vanderbilt, bested Shamrock V in four races with convincing victories, and after the fourth race, which clinched the cup for Enterprise , Sir Thomas Lipton was heard to utter "I can't win". Lipton, after endearing himself to the American public for 31 years and five attempts, would die the following year, never fulfilling his ambition to win the Cup. This lot is being sold to support the endowment of scholarships at IYRS School of Technology and Trades. Oil on canvas, 26" x 46". Framed 29.5" x 54.75".
