Jakob Wilhelm Mechau (1745 Leipzig - 1808 Dresden): 3 Illustrations for: Sophia's Journey from Memel to Saxony, 18th century, Pen drawing Technique: Washed Pen drawing on Paper Inscription: inscribed on verso Date: 18th century Description: After training in Berlin with Bernhard Rode and with Adam Friedrich Oeser in Leipzig and Dresden, Jakob Wilhelm Mechau returned to his hometown of Leipzig for three years in 1773. Our small series of illustrations for Johann Timotheus Hermes' "Sophiens Reise von Memel nach Sachsen" (Sophia's Journey from Memel to Saxony) dates from precisely this period. In addition to his famous landscape paintings between Claude Lorrain and Jakob Philipp Hackert, Mechau created several illustrations, several of which are in the Albertina in Vienna. Apart from the virtuously composed scenery, which makes one forget the small, difficult format, the works are particularly captivating because of the way the figures are embedded in an independent and defined space. In Mechau's work, the often stage-set and summary nature of such text copy gives way to a narrative stringency that incorporates the pictorial space and anchors the figures in it. In classic English style, the epistolary novel tells the story of the young orphan Sophie, who wants to deliver some letters to her patroness, the widow E. from Memel, as a thank-you for taking her in. All this in the company of her long-lost brother, who, as a Russian officer, promises protection on the roads that have been unsafe since the Seven Years' War. As one would expect, the novel develops in an extremely convoluted manner. A recurring theme of the novel is the contrast between the nobility and the bourgeoisie and the problem of reflection. Sophie's intense confrontation with her own feelings often causes her to misjudge the right path and culminates in a serious indecision. Ultimately, this is also the reason why Sophie only makes it from Memel to Gdansk in five volumes, a distance of about three hundred kilometres. Sophie's "reflective brittleness", which manifests itself in her uncertainty about the right choice of the two men she meets in the novel, is understood by Hermes as the "unnatural". It is precisely the return to "naturalness" that he feels is the ideal for the 70s of the 18th century. It is Sophie's excessive reflectiveness that denies her natural impulses and sensations. This hesitancy, which is already inherent in Hermes' character of Sophie, ultimately leads to the subjectivism of a Werther with all its consequences. Jakob Wilhelm Mechau (1745 Leipzig - 1808 Dresden): 3 Illustrations for: Sophia's Journey from Memel to Saxony, , Pen drawing Technique: Washed Pen drawing on Paper Inscription: inscribed on verso Date: Description: After training in Berlin with Bernhard Rode and with Adam Friedrich Oeser in Leipzig and Dresden, Jakob Wilhelm Mechau returned to his hometown of Leipzig for three years in 1773. Die "Mahlerisch radirte[n] Prospecte" stellen am Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts eines der ehrgeizigsten Projekte auf dem Gebiet der Landschaftgrafik dar.
