Ralph Eugene Meatyard made his living as an optician in Lexington while creating enigmatic staged photographs featuring his family or friends. He would first pick up a specific environment and look for a specific light at a precise moment before placing his subjects in the frame. His photographs result as simultaneously tender, surreal and theatrical compositions.

Framed to 14 3/16 x 18 1/4 in.  Ralph Eugene Meatyard (1925-1972) was an optician and innovative photographer based in Lexington, Kentucky. His unique artistic vision blended various genres and experimental techniques, creating enigmatic works that included dreamlike portraits, multiple exposures, and abstract images. Meatyard was part of a creative circle that included poets, mystics, and fellow photographers, and he collaborated with writer Wendell Berry on a book about Kentucky's Red River Gorge. His final series, "The Family Album of Lucybelle Crater," featured masked figures in symbolic compositions.
