          GEORGE MEARS (UK, 1865-1910) Royal Navy Frigate "City of Liverpool" underway under half sail, passing a village point, oil on canvas, signed lower right, ship's name at bottom, in gold molded cove frame, OS: 17" x 20 1/2", SS: 11 1/2" x 15 1/2", overall craquelure. HMS Liverpool was a 28-gun Coventry-class sixth-rate frigate of the Royal Navy. Launched in 1758, she saw active service in the Seven Years' War and the American Revolutionary War. She was wrecked in Jamaica Bay, near New York, in 1778.

          GEORGE MEARS (BRITISH 1826 - 1906) The paddle steamer P.S. Rouen signed and dated G MEARS / 89 (lower right) oil on canvas 51 x 92 cm (20 x 36 in) PROVENANCE: Belgrave Gallery Ltd, London (by 1974) Acquired from the above by the family of the present owner George Mears, painter of ship portraits, flourished during the late 19th century and specialised in depicting steam and sailing vessels. His accurate portrayal of the details of the boats he painted gained him employment as the official ship's portrait painter to the major cross-channel shipping company, including the highly successful Peninsular & Oriental Steam Navigation Company (P&O). Mears also received private commissions, notably at the end of the century for the Royal Yachts, Victoria & Albert I & II.

          GEORGE MEARS United Kingdom, 1826-1902 H.M.S. Topaze passing the Royal Yacht Victoria & Albert II, circa 1858. Provenance: Sotheby's, Scotland, August 1973. Acquired at the above sale by Richard Kelton. H.M.S. Topaze was a wood steam/screw frigate launched in May 1858. She is noted as the ship that brought the Easter Island statue back to the British Museum. In the background here is a paddlewheel-driven steam yacht built in 1855, the Victoria & Albert II , Queen Victoria's yacht. The schooner yacht America is on the right, the finish line buoy is in the left foreground, and the distant second-place yacht, the cutter Aurora , is in the far right background. From the Kelton Collection of Marine Art & Artifacts. Oil on canvas, 18" x 36". Framed 23" x 40.75".

Label and tag from Wally Findlay Gallery of NYC, having a price of $24,000. Cleaned. OS: 44.5 x 24.5. SS: 35.5 x 19.25 Launched in 1865, the "Princess Alice" sank in the Thames after a collision with a Collier on September 3, 1878, with a loss of 600 to 700 souls, the greatest tragedy of any inland sinking.

          GEORGE MEARS (BRITISH, 1865-1910), The London Brighton & South Coast Railway Co. channel ferry 'Prince Arthur', Signed and dated 'G. Mears '96' (lower right), Oil on canvas, 11? x 23in. (29 x 58.5cm.), Built by Denny Bros. of Dumbarton for the London Brighton and South Coast Railway Co., she was ordered in October 1895 and delivered in July 1896 for a total cost of ?20,296. A handsome vessel with raked twin pole masts, she registered 705 tons and her two triple expansion engines gave her a very satisfactory service speed just shy of 16 knots. She was transferred to the South Eastern and Chatham Railway in 1901, renamed Deal, and served a further twenty-five years before being sold to Youngs of Sunderland for breaking in 1926.

MEARS / '86" Oil on artists board 14 ¾ x 23 ½ inches Provenance: From the collection of James Maxime DuPont (1912-1991) of New Jersey Estimate: $200 - $400 James DuPont (1912-1991) was intensely interested in a wide variety of collecting areas. Egyptian, Asian, Italian, Tribal, Woodlands American and South American artifacts were all of interest to him and were gathered early on in his collecting career. Many of the most important and interesting objects have late-19th or early-20th century inscriptions indicating origin or provenance on labels attached to the pieces, which shows the extent of documentation provided on these very fine collectible objects.

          GEORGE MEARS (BRITISH, ACT. 1866-1895). THE RESCUE OF THE S.S. "DANMARK" BY THE BRITISH STEAMSHIP "MISSOURI" IN THE NORTH ATLANTIC, 1889. The Thingvalla Company's "Danmark" left Copenhagen with 735 people on board: 669 passengers, including 65 children, most immigrants bound for America, and a crew of 66 men. Wrecked by a violent storm, her distress signals were sighted by Captain Hamilton Murrell on the "Missouri," who threw cargo overboard and in 4 1/2hours saved every soul by means of boats and lines, landing part at St. Michael's in the Azores, and the rest at Philadelphia.Oil on artist's board, 12 x 19 3/4inches.
