Provenance: Vangard Gallery, Cork (label verso); Private Collection Exhibited: Vangard Gallery, Cork: Sean McSweeney (From new Work) 13th October - 5th November 2005 McSweeney's paintings fall within that painterly tradition in twentieth-century Irish art, one that includes Jack Yeats, Patrick Collins and Tony O'Malley-artists who sought to capture the colours, textures and atmosphere of the Irish landscape, but who also recognised the medium of oil paint as possessing its own inherent expressive qualities. McSweeney delighted in creating rich expressionist canvases, using broad brushstrokes, overlaying small, almost delicate, intense flashes of against a dark background. In this large canvas, there are two distinct areas, on the right a dark ground, with horizontal strokes of white and blue, counterpointed with vertical flashes of green, while on the left, the vertical marks are light brown and the dark ground is enlivened with patches of intense red. In a representational sense, the painting might be read as shore and sea, but in terms of its qualities as a work of art, it is primarily an essay in lyrical abstraction and a homage to the natural world. Born in Dublin in 1935, McSweeney was largely self-taught as an artist, although he did attend evening classes at NCAD. He first exhibited at the Dawson Gallery when he was thirty years old. Two years later, in 1967, he and Sheila Murphy married and moved to Co. Wicklow, where they lived for two decades, before settling at Ballyconnell in Co. Sligo, Sean's mother's birthplace. The schoolhouse his mother had attended became his studio. Elected a member of Aosdána in 1984, his work has been shown in many exhibitions, and a retrospective was held at the Galway Arts Festival in 1990, shown subsequently at the RHA Gallery in Dublin. In 2007 a touring exhibition was shown at venues throughout Ireland, including the Model Arts Centre in Sligo and the Triskel in Cork. McSweeney also exhibited at the Taylor Galleries in Dublin, the Fendersky in Belfast and the John Martin Gallery in London. He is represented in many key collections in Ireland including the Ulster Museum, the Hugh Lane Gallery, and the Crawford Art Gallery, Cork. Peter Murray, March 2023

      Sean McSweeney HRHA (1935-2018) Conway's Bog (2003)

      Est: €4,000 - €6,000

Sean McSweeney HRHA (1935-2018) Conway's Bog (2003) oil on board signed and dated 'Sean McSweeney '03' lower left, titled verso h:40.80  w:51 cm. Provenance: John Martin Gallery, London (label verso); Private Collection One of the most important Irish painters of the 20th century, and a landscape painter of brilliance, Sean McSweeney moved with his family from Co Wicklow to rural Co Sligo, on the coast, his mother's family home and a region he'd known since childhood. The move greatly changed his approach to painting. In place of the vertical, mountainous landscape of Wicklow, as he put it, there was the horizontal, windswept terrain of sea, shore and bogland. He looked downwards, in close-up, as the vegetation changed in time with the seasons and at the pools nestled in the solid masses of peat.

Provenance: John Martin of London Gallery (label verso); Private Collection Although best known for its mountains such as Ben Bulben and its dramatic Atlantic coastline - recorded in many paintings by Jack B. Yeats - the county of Sligo also incorporates extensive areas of bogland, which the artist Sean McSweeney made his own, delving into these overlooked areas of peat and wetland and deriving inspiration from details such as brightly-coloured flowers standing out against a dark background of peat. McSweeney's semi-abstract paintings fall within a painterly tradition in twentieth century Irish art, one that includes Yeats, Patrick Collins and other artists who sought to capture the colours and textures and atmosphere of the West of Ireland landscape. McSweeney delighted in creating rich expressionist canvases, using broad brushstrokes, overlaying small, almost delicate, intense flashes of blue and green against a dark background. A band of colour frames the central rectangle in this lyrical and expressive composition, that suggests, rather than represents, Sligo's hinterland, wet, boggy, and rich in flora and fauna. Born in Dublin in 1935, McSweeney was largely self-taught as an artist, although he did attend evening classes at NCAD. He first exhibited at the Dawson Gallery, when he was thirty years old. Two years later, in 1967, he and Sheila Murphy married and moved to Co. Wicklow, where they lived for two decades, before settling at Ballyconnell in Co. Sligo, Sean's mother's birthplace. Provenance: Private Collection Having spent many years in Wicklow, Sean McSweeney and his family moved to Ballyconnell close to the sea in Co Sligo in 1985, a place familiar to him from childhood summers. The move, he reflected later, shifted the emphasis in his work from vertical to horizontal - as in this lyrical study. In the windswept landscape, he began to look down, at close range, exploring a bogland world fringed by the Atlantic. Bog pools and a seasonal cycle of vegetation provided him with an infinite range of subject matter.

Born in Dublin in 1935, Sean McSweeney is regarded as one of the leading 20th century Irish artists. Despite no professional training McSweeney immersed himself in art from a young age, learning from his father who was a professional artist and also by visiting the Hugh Lane Gallery in Dublin. In the 1960s, McSweeney began exhibiting regularly at the Irish Exhibition of Living Art and the Oireachtas. McSweeney has been represented by Dawson Gallery in Dublin and a retrospective was held by the Galway Arts Festival, a great accolade. McSweeney's name has become synonymous with his abstract and expressive views of the Sligo coastline.

Provenance: Vangard Gallery, Cork (label verso); Private Collection Exhibited: Vangard Gallery, Cork: Sean McSweeney (From new Work) 13th October - 5th November 2005 Although he was born and grew up in Dublin, Sean McSweeney was decisively influenced as an artist by the rural backgrounds of both his parents - his father's in Co Meath and his mother's in Co Sligo. In fact his childhood summers were spent in Sligo with relatives. When he began to paint in earnest, he was drawn to landscape: the Phoenix Park and Co Wicklow. In 1967 he moved to Wicklow. The steep valleys, trees and bogland, he found, tended to suck in the light, as he put it, making for a certain darkness of tonality in much of his Wicklow work. Then, in 1984, he moved with his family to Ballyconnell in Sligo, adjacent to the sea. The building that had been the school his mother attended became his studio. Somewhat to his surprise, he found it difficult to adjust artistically to the new setting. As opposed to the verticality of Wicklow, Sligo was horizontal, defined by bogland, shoreline and sea. The sea, he found, made the light and the weather thrillingly unpredictable. He had to get used to looking down at the ground, becoming used to the windswept vegetation, the bog pools. When he did so the results were spectacular, leading to much of the best work of his life. This superb, relatively large-scale painting is an excellent example, demonstrating the striking individuality of his vision and his unrivalled attentiveness to detail, reflecting every nuance in the dynamic seasonal shifts. His affinity with such Irish artists as Patrick Collins and Nano Reid is apparent, but also Mark Rothko and Howard Hodgkin. The bold vertical division separates the glittering surface of the bog pool and the dark, peaty saturated ground. In both, spring shoots are stirring. Aidan Dunne, October 2020

Provenance: Sandford Gallery, Dublin; Private Collection When Sean McSweeney moved with his family to rural Co Sligo, close to Lissadell, in 1984, he was returning to the landscape of his childhood. The schoolhouse he'd attended as a child became his studio, close to his home and adjacent to his own strip of bogland, tucked in behind a rocky shoreline and stretched under a vast sky. This elemental landscape became a constantly changing source of inspiration through the seasons. McSweeney was a close day-to-day observer of the landscape, and his paintings are distillations of a wealth of elements rather than strict representational descriptions. This beautiful painting, charged with the energy and optimism of spring, is the work of an artist at the height of his powers.
