Mary McQueen - b.1912 d.1994

Painter, printmaker and teacher. Born in Carlton in 1912. In 1939 she began painting in watercolours, studied drawing under George Bell 1946-47 and printmaking at RMIT 1956-58, where she later taught drawing and printmaking.

In 1945 she held the first of many solo exhibitions. She was essentially a graphic artist, mainly producing works on paper, with a strong foundation in drawing but exploiting the decorative possibilities of colour.

Her favoured print medium was lithography and her preferred subjects animals, birds and landscape.
From 1943-57 she exhibited with the Victorian Artists’ Society and from 1960-64 with the Contemporary Art Society; she was included in their ‘First Australia-wide graphic art exhibition’ in 1960.

She won numerous prizes for drawings, prints and watercolours and is represented in the National Gallery of Australia , most state and regional galleries
