      Attributed to Murdoch McPherson (Canadian, 1841-1915), After Ange-Joseph Antoine Roux I (French, 1765-1835) Ship Francis of Salem watercolor on paper unsigned inscribed Ship Francis of Salem, A. Haraden, Master, lower margin flying flag of Joseph Peabody (1757-1844), the wealthiest merchant-shipowner in Salem, Massachusetts during the early 19th century. 16 1/2 x 23 inches. Provenance: Sotheby's, New York City, New York, 1989. A. Haraden likely refers to Andrew Haraden, (1811-1877) of Salem, Massachusetts, listed in federal census records as an "expressman." Haraden's name is also recorded in New England Seamen's Protection Certificate Index, 1796-1871, Mystic, Connecticut. His grandfather, Jonathan Haraden (1743-1803), was a Massachusetts-born merchant and privateersman during the Revolutionary War.
