They are forthrightly representational and he wants us to be in no doubt as to what is being represented. His definite sense of purpose was hard won. When he graduated from the Slade in London in the mid-1960s he was half-heartedly pursuing an abstract line of exploration because, as he later saw it, he was temperamentally unsuited to Pop art and conceptualism, the emerging, dominant trends of the time. In the event, the same applied to abstraction, and he gradually found his feet as a representational painter of the world around him, with his roots very much in the classical tradition. He gravitated towards some of the Italian ÔmetafisicaÕ painters and fully agreed with Carlo CarraÕs proposition that todayÕs painters should apply Renaissance methods to their contemporary world. He lived for a time in Germany, and then in Italy, before settling in Ireland in the late 1990s. While he was perpetually fascinated by the perceived division between the notionally industrious north of Europe and the sybaritic south as symbolised in Friedrich OverbeckÕs allegorical 19th century painting Italia and Germania, one feels the south captured his heart. This crisply observed still life nods to both Italia and Germania. It is delivered with the clarity of a de Chirico, and it luxuriates in the forms, textures and materials of the objects gathered within the composition. All of those objects are venerable products of centuries of civilization, streamlining form and function, beauty and utility, designed to make life better. At the same time, the basket and all the vessels we see are conspicuously empty, as though reminding us that the quality of life they promise in their intended functions requires a great deal of honest toil. McKenna exhibited with the Kerlin Gallery, Dublin and widely throughout Europe and the US. His work is included in numerous collections, public and private, in Ireland and internationally. They embody a harmony in living, working and thinking. He was shortlisted for the Turner Prize in 1986. McKenna was President of the RHA from 2005-2009, during which time the building was reconstructed, to include the school and studios. The present work was painting during his final year as president of the RHA. McKenna died at his home in Co. Carlow in 2017.

Provenance: Private Collection A major figure in European and Irish art from the 1980s, Stephen McKenna began his art student years as an abstract painter, mostly because he was averse to the dominance of Pop and Conceptualism at the time. But he was at heart a representational artist and his guiding light was Carlo Carra's idea that Renaissance methods were thoroughly at home in the contemporary world. He was fond of allegory and allusion. Here he arranges a number of props and elements charged with narrative and iconographic potential: in theatre, the end of act one is traditionally the point at which the protagonist is propelled into embarking on a decisive course of action. Settled in Co Carlow from the late 1990s, McKenna always saw himself as a European and travelled extensively on the continent.

One of the most significant representational painters to emerge in Europe in the latter part of the 20th century, Stephen McKenna was the son of a Scottish mother and a British Army officer from Co Tyrone. As a young child he witnessed devastated areas of post-war Europe - including London and Vienna - according to his fathers postings. He studied art at the Slade, but was increasingly ill at ease with the abstract idiom then in the ascendant. As the 1960s progressed, his work moved more towards representation. An offer of a studio led him to Berlin in the early 1970s. Not only was his artistic approach more acceptable there, he felt in touch with the entire tradition of European painting, visiting many museums to study the paintings at first hand.In the late 1970s, the international art world, including the art market, rediscovered figurative art, and McKenna found his work suddenly in great demand. He was also at a crossroads. He had become increasingly interested in the Germania-Italia divide in European culture, and he lived for a time in Brussels before moving to Italy. During this in-between period he made a number of works that seem to weigh up the arguments for the different, north-south approaches to life and culture, going through a veritable archive of the classical tradition.The Legacy is an inherited, living tradition. Around this time, McKenna made several works relating to Homers Odyssey, and the legacy includes an Homeric bust, a painted Etruscan vase, and the classical tradition in painting and sculpture. Natural abundance, including the glass of wine, suggests the southern reputation for luxuriant indulgence. Iconographically, apes symbolise vices, unfettered appetites, but also the arts of painting and sculpture, as in the phrase, Ars simia Naturae - art is the ape of nature, a motif that gained currency especially in Flemish painting.The artists years in Italy, as he consolidated his work, were among his most productive and happiest, but Ireland was always important to him as well. His father retired to Co Donegal and McKenna often stayed there and painted. Eventually, he settled in Bagenalstown, on the Barrow, and that local landscape became integral to his work. He curated a major exhibition The Pursuit of Painting at IMMA in 1997. He himself showed regularly with the Kerlin Gallery and was the subject of many survey and retrospective exhibitions including, most recently, A Painters Life at VISUAL Carlow.Aidan Dunne, 2019
