Born in Greensboro, North Carolina, Beverly McIver is currently the Esbenshade Professor of the Practice of Art, Art History and Visual Studies at Duke University. McIverâs work is in the permanent collection of the North Carolina Museum of Art, the Weatherspoon Art Museum, the Baltimore Museum of Art, the NCCU Museum of Art, the Asheville Museum of Art, The Crocker Art Museum, the Nelson Fine Arts Center Art Museum at Arizona State University, the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University, and the Mint Museum, Charlotte, North Carolina, as well as significant corporate and private collections. McIver has had solo exhibitions at the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art in 2017, North Carolina Museum of Art in 2011, and at the Mint Museum UPTOWN in 2012. From the Estate of the late Joseph D. Rowand, Chapel Hill, North Carolina Joe Rowand was instrumental in developing a contemporary art scene in North Carolina. After studying in New York City at Parsons, he brought the big city art feel to Chapel Hill, North Carolina when he opened Somerhill Gallery in 1972. BEVERLY MCIVER (1962 - ) Pretty is...a Little Black Girl. Color lithograph on Arches paper, 2002. 965x685 mm; 38x27 inches. Signed, titled, dated and numbered 14/50 in pencil, lower margin. Printed by Segura Art Studios, Notre Dame Center for Arts & Culture, with the blind stamp lower right. Another impression is in the permanent collection of the Minneapolis Institute of Art, Minnesota. Beverly McIver depicts herself here in blackface make-up, standing alone in an ambiguous setting, gazing pensively at the viewer. Dressed in a maid's uniform (her mother was a domestic worker), she wears a clown's wig and white gloves, cradling a pair of black-skinned dolls in her arm. Her shoes and socks are those of a child. On the wall behind her hangs a portrait of a grinning circus clown. The scene recounts a recurring dream from McIver's childhood. She explained: "As a child, I had dreamed of becoming a clown to escape my black skin, poverty, and the housing project I once called home. In high school, she was a pre-professional clown and considered attending clown college. She says it was her "liberation." For McIver, the self-portrait is a journey in self-revelation in which she confronts black stereotypes while seeking her own identity as a woman and an African American.

Happy is an excellent example of the work of Beverly McIver, a significant contemporary painter known for her interest in portraits and representation. Beverly McIver has received several awards and honors, including a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Radcliffe Fellowship, a Louis Comfort Tiffany Award and most recently a Rome Prize Fellowship. She is currently the Esbenshade Professor of the Practice of Visual Arts at Duke University. Her paintings are found in many institutional collections including the Mint Museum, the Crocker Art Museum, the Philadelphia Academy of the Fine Arts, the Nasher Art Museum and the Baltimore Museum of Art.
