JERVIS MCENTEE, OIL ON CANVAS - VALLEY OF HUMBOLDT

        Est: $35,000 - $70,000

McENTEE, Jervis (American, 1828-1891). Valley of Humboldt. Oil on canvas. Signed in monorgram "JME" lower right and dated 1882. 17 3/4" x 34 5/16" canvas, 30 3/4" x 46 3/4" framed. “We are in the valley of the Humboldt ... 6,000 feet above the sea and a range of the Humboldt mountains rises just in the rear of the fort to a height of 5,000 feet ... I paint nearly every day and to my surprise I have some good sky effects since I have been here.” - Jervis McEntee Hudson River School artist Jervis McEntee (1828–1891) is commonly known for his moody landscapes and forest interiors. Much attention has been paid to his close associations with other Hudson River School painters and the milieu of the storied Tenth Street Studio Building. In turn, significant periods of his oeuvre have been overlooked. Such is the case with the artist’s trip and subsequent canvases depicting the American West. These undervalued works are ripe for new research and present a rare opportunity for the discerning American art collector. McEntee’s Valley of Humboldt is among just a handful of examples from the artist’s experimental period here. The artist moved beyond his characteristically austere autumnal landscapes to explore sublime topography and more vivid colors that came to define the promise of the American West. Today, McEntee’s works are in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum, the National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C., and the Cleveland Museum of Art, among others.

Landscape painter of the Hudson River School, John McEntee studied at the National Academy by 1850, apprenticed to Frederic Edwin Church, and was one of the charter residents of Richard Morris Hunt's Tenth Street Studio. His work was darker and more melancholy than that of most of his compatriots, which may account for his lesser degree of success.

McEntee, Jervis (1828-1891) American Artist Hudson River School Painting. Oil on Canvas - Signed lower left '70. Sale Stamp on reverse. Titled "In The Autumn Woods" Canvas measures 13.5x14 in ornate frame to overall size of 24x27. Jervis McEntee was loyally hinged to the Hudson School of painters and his numerous landscape of the areas in and around the Catskills and along the Hudson River leave a visual legacy of the natural beauty of the area in the 19th century. Although he was by most accounts one of the lesser-known artists of the Hudson School, he gained valuable experience as an apprentice to Frederick Church during his formative years, and he traveled with many of the Hudson School masters like Sandford Gifford, John Weir and Eastman Johnson. He left a trove of diaries now conserved at the Smithsonian that offer a rich chronicle of what life was like in Gilded Age America. The present work was one of the numerous oils probably painted painted en plein air or based on sketches. While many Hudson School painters were proned to romantic embellishment McEntee was focused on representing the purity of the view in front of his easel and selected subjects like forest ravines with felled trees in a more transitional time in the season.

Jervis McEntee's seminal 1862 Fire of Leaves is arguably the finest and most important masterwork by the artist to ever come to market. The painting is not only near flawless in artistic merit, it also serves as a poignant homage to the encroaching conclusion of the Civil War, and America's deep desire for a return to peace and normalcy. McEntee was admitted to the National Academy of Design in New York in 1860, in recognition of his painting Melancholy Days (now lost). To quote Charles Eldredge in his essay for Collegial Collectors, "Scenes registering states of mind, either the maker's or the age's, through the ostensibly descriptive treatment of nature often appeared at moments of stress, as during the Civil War." In 1862, in the darkest days of fratricidal slaughter, McEntee exhibited another ambitious canvas at the Academy, The Fire of Leaves, which illustrates his admitted ‘preference for the soberer phases of Nature, the gray days of November and its leafless trees.' In a dreary and empty landscape, between separate paths by which they arrived at this foresaken spot and by which they might depart, two boys huddle by a smoldering fire, their companionship the necessary defense against the encroaching gloom and cold; on the ground beside them lie their caps of blue and grey, a small but crucial detail that provides the piquant clue to the painting's pacific metaphor. As Eleanor Jones Harvey observes in The Civil War and American Art, "The idea of reconciliation found similar expression in one of Jervis McEntee's tender yet somber landscape paintings. The Fire of Leaves of 1862 takes its title from the two small boys huddled over a tiny flame they have kindled from the dry leaves at the edge of a wood. One is dressed in blue, his kepi hat beside him, the other in butternut with a red scarf and slouch hat. Their clothes evoke the uniforms of the Union and the Confederacy. Like Cropsey's painting of Richmond Hill, the message is understated, representing a yearning for peace based on mutual regard. In the fading light, McEntee's two children have shed their differences, drawing close, knowing that in the shared warmth of the fire and their bodies lies their survival, here and now, and for the future. Children--so often read as portents of the future-– here, whether playing at soldiers or as literal adversaries, have abandoned their quarrels, finding common cause. The underlying message of McEntee's The Fire of Leaves is subtle, yet pointed. The future will quite literally be in the hands of children raised on war. Their ability to step

Note: There are numerous entries in McEntee's diaries between 1886 and 1888 regarding a series of small studies and paintings "of effects", that McEntee completed on a daily basis as a way to make some much needed money. He "greatly enjoyed" completing this collection, and sold the group of 75 paintings at an auction of his work in March of 1888. While the date on this work is difficult to make out, it appears under magnification to be 1887. Combined with the subject matter, which is certainly the atmosphere, it is quite possible this was one of McEntee's atmospheric studies from that series. LITERATURE: National Academy of Design, Illustrated Catalogue of the Fifty-Second Annual Exhibition, New York, 1877, p. 36, no. 359. Jervis McEntee, a landscape painter of the Hudson River School active in the mid-nineteenth century, is known for his intensely poetic and sensitive imagery. Although he was a national academician who had apprenticed with Frederic Edwin Church—the celebrated painter with whom he enjoyed a warm lifelong friendship—McEntee possessed an artistic sensibility that was very different from that of Church as well as many of his compatriots who favored a more dramatic and hyperbolic approach to nature. Jervis McEntee preferred what he described as the "quiet, pensive, restful side of nature," which can be felt in the present scene of a woodland brook winding its way over rocks and between trees that are beginning to shed their leaves under a crisp blue autumn sky. A gifted poet in paint, McEntee makes sure the viewer feels the warmth of the sun together with a chill in the air—a reminder that the season is nearing its end. The contrast injects a note of melancholy into the visual experience, elevating something merely pleasant to something with greater poignancy. This quality became a hallmark of McEntee's best works. In addition to his sketches and paintings, Jervis McEntee also left an enduring legacy with his incredibly detailed journal entries and letters (preserved at the Archives of American Art, Washington, DC). Through the archives of his handwritten pages, historians have been able to create a vibrant and accurate understanding of what the life of a New York City painter was like during the socially boisterous Gilded Era. While McEntee and his lively wife Gertrude made their home in an idyllic cottage on the McEntee family property overlooking the town of Rondout, New York (now Kingston) on the Hudson River, where he spent the summers and autumns sketching in the nearby Catskill mountains, the artist spent his winters in New York City. There he relied upon his summer and autumn studies to create paintings in his studio. He lived at Richard Morris Hunt's celebrated Tenth Street Studio Building, home to so many notable artists of the day. Entee was, in fact, one of the charter members of the studio complex and also one of the most social, owing in large part to his charismatic wife Gertrude who chose to spend part of each winter there with her husband. Since many of the building's other occupants were bachelors or commuters, McEntee and Gertrude (his well-loved, sympathetic hostess) became the center of a spontaneous salon frequented by some of the best-known artists, writers, and actors of the era. Jervis McEntee's journals are incredibly valuable documents that chronicle the nascence and progress of specific paintings he produced. The artist frequently moaned and groaned in them complaining about compositions he was struggling with. He also identified where he hoped to exhibit certain works, and sometimes even mentioned names of collectors who bought them. Happily, the present painting was one of the works he discussed. Interestingly, unlike most of his efforts
