Provenance: Acquired directly from the artist. Private Collection, Toronto. Literature: John Warkentin, Creating Memory, Toronto, 2010, pages 101-102. Note: The works contained in this lot provide a glimpse into William McElcheran's artistic process towards a large commissioned work, housed at WaterPark Place at 10 Bay Street in Toronto. The 1987 pastel-heightened artist's proof of the colour lithograph includes profile studies of figures, some similar to those who would later inhabit Post-Industrial Kid. The 1988 watercolour and pencil displays McElcheran's vision for the completed project, leading to the terracotta bas-relief from the same year, featuring the sculpted figures of businessmen and women, the scene making up the lower centre section of the completed marble installation. These three works of art show the initial planning (both general and detailed) towards the 1990 completion of Post-Industrial Kid. Featuring the identity and locations of works of art installed throughout Toronto's downtown core, John Warkentin discusses the completed work of art in Creating Memory: "As soon as you enter the south entrance of WaterPark Place at 10 Bay Street, you are inexorably drawn into the huge red marble bas-relief Post-Industrial Kid (1990) by William McElcheran (1927-29). The bas-relief, 7.5 m high and 3.8 m wide, faces the street and extends all the way from floor ceiling in the lofty elevator lobby. Two freestanding figures, one on each side of the bas-relief, increase the full width of the sculpture to 5.5 m. Before us is a typical downtown business streetscape on a beautiful spring of fall day in the city. Tall office buildings frame each side of the street, bright fluffy clouds float in the sky, and the roadway is packed with ethnically diverse people, most wearing topcoats. They are all businessmen, but a few businesswomen can be seen as well. Most are walking rapidly, with only a few stopping to talk. McElcheran portrays a productive society - the people in his many Toronto sculptures are always dressed for work and going to or coming from work.
