Brian McCutcheon (American; b. 1965) Gone Cibachrome print on paper 2011. From the 'Alien Landscape' series. Edition 1/5 + AP. Courtesy of the artist. Indianapolis-based artist Brian McCutcheon's (American, b. 1965) work was featured in a 2011 solo exhibition titled Out of this World in the IMA's McCormack Forefront Galleries. This new body of work included sculpture, installation, photography, and video that together formed a fictional narrative exploring correlations between play, masculinity, the notion of flight, and the relationship between McCutcheon and his own son. Gone was created for Out of this World, and is one of five photographs in McCutcheon's Alien Landscape series. The series depicts McCutcheon and his son performing day-to-day activities in the Indiana landscape while donning replicas of space suits from NASA's Mercury program. Cruise and Shop, other photographs from McCutcheon's Alien Landscape series, are represented in the IMA's permanent collection, along with Capsule, a to-scale replica of John Glenn's Mercury 7 capsule. McCutcheon studied architecture at the University of Michigan, received a BFA from Colorado State University and an MFA from the Cranbrook Academy of Art. McCutcheon is a co-founder and partner of Indianapolis Fabrications (iFab), a custom fabrication studio and has been the recipient of numerous artist grants, awards, and residencies, most recently a 2010-11 Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant, a 2009 Efroymson Contemporary Arts Fellowship, and a summer residency at Sculpture Space in Utica, NY in 2009. 40" x 50"
