Stefana McClure, Map of the World (British Isles), Cut paper, 22" circumference

    Est: $5,000 - $7,000

Stefana McClure Map of the World (British Isles) Cut paper 2009-2010. Provenance: the artist and Josee Bienvenu Gallery, New York. Stefana McClure's (Irish, b. 1959) work explores the cultural and linguistic implications of transnational travel. A native of Belfast, McClure has lived in London, Tokyo, and New York. Her experiences outside of her native country have had a profound effect on her work, through which McClure investigates the visual properties of language. She is fascinated by the physical appearance of closed captions, dictionary definitions, subtitles and the layout of text on paper. Map of the World (British Isles) consists of linear strips cut from a map, which is then transformed into a sculpture by McClure rolling the strips into a ball. As she rolls each strip together, her final product is a globe representing her idea of cultural interconnection. McClure received her BA in sculpture at the Hornsey College of Art, London in 1984. In 1995, she received an MFA in papermaking from Kyoto Seika University, Kyoto, Japan. She has also received prestigious grants and scholarships such as the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant for 2001-2002 and in 1998 the Visiting Artist Scholarship from Awayamakawa, Japan. Her work has been displayed in numerous solo and group exhibitions such as the Cincinnati Museum of Art and the Yale University Art Gallery. 22" circumference
