Edith McClelland

A recipient of many awards, both local and international, and an elected member of the Watercolour Society of Ireland [WCSI] and the Ulster Society of Women Artists [UWA], Edith is also a founding member of the Art Eireann Group of Artists [AEA] and is well known for her expressive, strong watercolour and dramatic oil paintings which are keenly sought after.

Edith’s paintings are featured in Kennedy Publishing’s book, “The Best of Worldwide Water Media Artists”, due for release Autumn 2012, and her work can be found in numerous private collections worldwide. She has exhibited widely throughout the Middle East, London and Ireland. A qualified Interior & Lighting Designer, Edith has also been involved in the exciting world of theatre stage set and programme design and regularly donates commissioned paintings to raise funds for various cancer and children's charities as well as the RNLI and Community Rescue, CRS. and has gifted work to the Breast Screening Unit, Altnagelvin Hospital. She is also an art tutor, currently running watercolour classes in the studio and plans to include other mediums and one day workshops in the near future. Her work also hangs in the prestigious permanent collection of the WCSI which is located at the University of Limerick, Ireland.

Born in Ballymoney in 1957 and a native of Ballycastle, Edith worked and lived in the Middle East for many years. She is widely travelled but happiest at home in her Ballycastle studio. As a self taught artist and watercolour tutor, she strongly believes that the learning process never ceases, “like everything else in life, the harder you work, the more you learn and ultimately achieve. It is an incredibly satisfying process”.

In her own words, “I had my first commission from the Belfast Telegraph at the age of twelve and, in spite of a demanding family life and career in computer administration and management, I always managed to make time for art, painting to commission and participating in various exhibitions. I have been drawing and painting since I could hold a brush and am passionate about my work, particularly revolving around all aspects of marine painting. To capture the endless energy and movement of the sea would be one of my more challenging goals and I spend hours in this pursuit. The stunning Irish landscapes and coastlines surrounding my studio are amongst some of the most visually exciting anywhere in the world – an artist’s dream”.
