        Sep. 20, 2023

Henry Bainbridge McCarter (American, 1864-1942) Three Bouquets

        Est: $3,000 - $5,000

Henry Bainbridge McCarter (American, 1864-1942) Three Bouquets Signed with Artist's initials 'H M' bottom right, oil on canvas 30 x 25 in. (76.2 x 63.5cm) Provenance Collection of Mr. and Mrs. Robert C. Bodine, New Hope, Pennsylvania (per label affixed to upper stretcher verso). Brown Brothers Auction, Lahaska, n.d. (1990s). Acquired directly from the above sale. Property from the Estate of Angela Gross Folk, New Jersey. The unlined canvas in overall very good condition. The canvas has slightly buckled verso, at the bottom, but the impasto is so thick that it does not peer through the front and is therefore invisible. Examination under UV light reveals minuscule dots of inpainting at center on the bottom of the white vase (likely inpainted old flakes). Otherwise untouched: a lot of hues do fluoresce (especially the yellows and reds), but this is due to the pigments in the paint, and not a sign of restoration. To request additional information or access to more images, please contact Specialist Raphael Chatroux at rchatroux@freemansauction.com. Frame: 38 1/4 x 33 1/4 x 2 1/4 in.

Henry Bainbridge McCarter (AMERICAN, B.C. 1864–1942) SEATED NUDE

        Est: $3,000 - $5,000

Henry Bainbridge McCarter (American, B.C. 1864–1942) Seated Nude Indistinctly titled and signed with Artist's first initial 'H' verso, oil on canvas 20 1/4 x 20 1/8 in. (51.4 x 51.1cm) Provenance Collection of Attorney General Francis Biddle and his wife Katherine Garrison Chapin, Pennsylvania. By descent in the Biddle family. Estate of Edmund Randolph and Frances Disner Biddle, Philadelphia Main Line, Pennsylvania. Frame: 24 1/4 x 24 1/4 x 2 in. The unlined canvas in overall good condition, with some ripples to the canvas visible at upper left mostly. With what appear to be two repairs on either side of the model, at center left and center right along respective outer edges: some crackling and overly varnish surface in the blue areas. A small flake at upper left in the blue drapery (not obtrusive as the canvas ground is blue itself). The paint has been applied very thinly, and we do notice areas where the canvas is bare: this is part of the artist's working method. Examination under UV light does not reveal any sign of inpainting other than the two aforementioned areas, which appear very greenish under UV light. The work would likely benefit from a light cleaning.
