Edward McCartan Sold at Auction Prices

Sculptor, Painter, b. 1879 - d. 1947

(born 8 August 1879 Albany, New York; died 1947 New Rochelle, New York) American sculptor, painter. Edward Francis McCartan studied at the Pratt Institute, Art Students League, and with sculptor Herbert Adams in New York City. He traveled to Paris and studied at Ecole des Beaux-Arts from 1907-10. It was in Paris that he was struck by the decorative style of 18th Century French art and by the work of sculptor Jean-Antoine Houdon. While in Paris he started making small terracotta and plaster sculptures. Discovering there was a market for garden sculpture in the United States, in the early 1910s he started creating them; exhibiting his first work in 1912 and winning an award from the National Academy of Design that same year. As a result demand for McCartan’s garden sculpture sprang up; with mythological figures such as Diana and Pan being the most well known of his subjects. In the 1920s McCartan came to be known as one of America’s prominent sculptors, and such major museums as the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the National Gallery in Washington, D.C. have acquired his work.

            Sep. 05, 2024

EDWARD MCCARTAN BRONZE SCULPTURE GIRL DRINKING FROM A SHELL

            Est: $50,000 - $100,000

NOT ELIGIBLE FOR IN-HOUSE SHIPPING. DESCRIPTION: Edward McCartan 1879 - 1947 Nymph (Girl) Drinking From A Shell 1915 life-size bronze sculpture. This is one of four known life sized 62" castings. One, last known to be in a private collection and two others in museums. The Reading Public Museum, Reading, PA, and the Hermitage Museum Norfolk, VA. This example was sold by Doyle Auctioneers in 2023. The only other life-sized Edward McCartan known to have been auctioned in the 21st Century was by Sotheby's in 2000, a "super" life-sized piece, 83" "Diana". Edward McCartan, during an important period for his production of bronze artworks, had a studio in the artist colony, Sniffen Court, in New York along with Malvina Hoffman and Harriet Frishmuth. CONDITION: This sculpture has been lightly conserved since it was sold by Doyle. It was coated with an opaque green lacquer at the time of the Doyle sale, which was removed using non-abrasive methods that did not alter or damage the underlying original patina. The original patina does have various "over-patinas", such as verdigris,  from environmental exposure. The lacquer had likely been applied to the piece in the early-mid 1900's in order to suspend the verdigris that was taking place. Of the four known bronzes of this series, this is the only piece that still has the patina with which it was produced. There are three holes in the base from mounting. It is piped as a fountain piece and the piping is still in place. It tests, only using air, to be viable (non-leaking).
