After abandoning architecture for technical drawing and cartooning, his talent for photorealism soon earned him work at Graphic Films, an esteemed Hollywood studio for which he designed groundbreaking cosmic effects for the 1964 New York World's Fair. After seeing Trumbull's work, director Stanley Kubrick hired him to create animations and VFX shots - including the iconic Star Gate sequence - for what would become his seminal masterpiece 2001: A Space Odyssey. From that film's success, Trumbull became one of the industry's most trusted photographic effects experts, designing and producing legendary screen moments in such sci-fi landmarks as Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Star Trek: The Motion Picture, and Blade Runner, all three of which earned him Academy Award® nominations. In addition to directing the cult classics Silent Running and Brainstorm, Trumbull later received a Scientific and Engineering Award for his high-speed photography process Showscan in 1993, one of two specialty awards given to him by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences before his death in 2022. 60 years since he first made his mark on global cinema, Propstore today celebrates Douglas Trumbull by presenting a selection of rare memorabilia from his personal collection to the public. Original poster. Offset. Cond A- Original folds, a small lack on the band at the bottom right, and a tiny perforation at the top left. A banner announcing the release of the film pasted on the poster. This is probably the first scheduled date for the film's release in France. RARE. Poster of the iconic science fiction film by Stanley Kubrick, based on works by novelist Arthur C. Clarke. Released in 1968, the plot takes place in 2001. But the film is made during a period of the Cold War, the space race and the nuclear threat. It should be noted that 1 year after the film's release, in 1969, human geings will walk on the Moon for the first time. Suggesting the evolution of humanity helped at each specific moment of the Evolutiont by an extraterrestrial force, the brilliant director will go so far as to include Strauss's music "Thus Spoke Zarathustra" in his film. Thus suggesting the philosophical principle of the superman developed in the work of Nietzsche, on which Strauss get inspired to compose. The poster fo rhe film was made by Robert McCall, none other to be the official painter of NASA. He has, among other things, created for the American space Agency many mission badges, that makes him one of the few artists whose works have been in space or on the Moon. As an anticipation film, we can underline that it is by its realization as its subject. Its special effects had never been seen at the time, and the famous Star Wars using the same processes would not be released until 9 years later. He will also obtain the Oscar for best special effects in 1969. The film develops the idea of using an IA (Intelligence Artificial).Incredible in 1968 but in our daily lives today. Recall that in 1968 the very first computer mouse was released. This legendary film has considerably influenced the genre. So today we can still see strong references to this film in works like "Interstellar" by Christopher Nolan. Nolan who clearly did an homage to his predecessor, and his work could be seen as an extension of 2001, showing a possible new path in the evolution of the human beings. Each poster will be put in a tube, or grouped together in a tube with the other lots from the same buyer.

NASA Mission Control Emblem Color Photo Signed by Eight

            Est: $800 - $1,200

NASA Mission Control Emblem Color Photo Signed by Eight Controllers. A professional-quality 8" x 10" silk finish color photo of the Robert McCall-designed insignia for the Mission Control team. Boldly signed in various felt tips by eight of the most legendary members of the group: "Gene Kranz", "Glynn Lunney", "John Hodge", "Milton Windler", "Chris Kraft", "Jerry Bostick", "Gerry Griffin", and "Sy Liebergot". These were men who directed America's manned space missions leading to and including six successful moon landings. The Latin along the top of the emblem, "Res Gesta Par Excellentiam," translates to "Achievement Through Excellence". A scarce grouping of important signatures. Excellent. Interestingly, Gene Kranz was chiefly responsible for the creation of this handsome insignia. He discusses it in his book: "Bob McCall, in my belief the premier artist of space, had been sitting on the step to the right of the flight director console, sketching during the final Apollo EVAs. He had designed the Apollo 17 crew patch. When Bob took a break for a cup of coffee, I joined him in the cafeteria... I don't think Bob was surprised when I asked him to design an emblem for the Mission Control team. I spoke emotionally, from my heart and gut, about the control teams and crews, and our life in Mission Control. 'We fought and won the race in space and listened to the cries of the Apollo 1 crew. With great resolve and personal anger, we picked up the pieces, pounded them together, and went on the attack again. We were the ones in the trenches of space and with only the tools of leadership, trust, and teamwork, we contained the risks and made the conquest of space possible.' Over the next six months, McCall developed the emblem worn proudly by every subsequent generation of mission controller." (Failure is Not an Option, page 376).
