    Est: $250 - $350

CLIFFORD MCBRIDE (1901 -1951) American cartoonist and illustrator, best known for his popular comic strips Napoleon and Uncle Elby. Rare original early strip, 21" x 4", dated 1916 and signed in the panel "McBride". Titled "Story of Oystermen", it is accomplished in an illustration style reminiscent of James Montgomery Flagg. This item will be of interest of to collectors of Long Island material as it pertains to the legendary Captain Gill, of Black Swan fame. McBride dramatically illustrates how Gill became blind at age 53 but refused to live ashore and continued, with the help of others, to rove Oyster Bay earning a living. Years later, a time came when no one remained to help him and he was forced to tie the Black Swan to a pier in the Patchogue River, sending ashore for food and supplies as needed. When Capt. Gill was 93 years old when the Black Swan caught fire, and authorities found him trying to bail water from the charred cabin. He was institutionalized at an almshouse, where he died soon after, his last words being a request that the Black Swan's hull be taken out to sea and sunk. Very good to fine condition, a most unusual item.
