    Nov. 12, 2024

    GRACE MCARTHUR (AMERICAN, 1899-2015)

    Est: £200 - £300

GRACE MCARTHUR (AMERICAN, 1899-2015) GRACE MCARTHUR (AMERICAN, 1899-2015) Recess signed 'Grace' (lower left); titled and dated 'Recess January 1964' (on the frame verso) oil on canvasboard 19 x 25 cm. (7 1/2 x 9 7/8 in.) Grace McArthur was an American folk artist based in Michigan. She began painting later in life, age 50 once she was already a great grandmother. She previously enjoyed working with ceramics, but developed an allergy to one of the materials, needing a new creative outlet she turned to painting. McArthur painted scenes of rural life, with bright images bustling with figures, buildings, and nature. McArthur's naive style is painted without preliminary sketches, archetypal motifs are featured in this painting; a red brick schoolhouse, children playing ring around the rosie and a tiny American flag. We can also see McArthur's sense of humour with a boy being chased by a dog.
