Colonial America c. 1765 "The Hon'ble Robert Monckton" Major General, Governor of New York and Colonel of His Majesty's 17th Regt. of Foot Historic Engraved Print by James McArdell c. 1765 French and Indian War Period, Historical Mezzotint Engraved Print, "The Hon'ble Robert Monckton, Major General, Governor of New York and Colonel of His Majesty's 17th Regt. of Foot.," Matted, engraved by James McArdell, Very Fine. This lovely fine quality large plate impressive French and Indian War Period Mezzotint Engraved Print of "The Hon'ble Robert Monckton, Major General, Governor of New York and Colonel of His Majesty's 17th Regt. of Foot." measures 11.25" x 16.25", and is simply matted to an overall size of 14.25" x 19.25". This outstanding high quality image being After an original Painting by the English artist Thomas Hudson, and is engraved by James McArdell. At the beginning outbreak of the Revolutionary War in 1775, General Robert Monckton was offered a military commission by King George of Great Britain to return to America, but he refused to take up arms against the American Colonies! This fine Mezzotint Print is from an Engraved Copper or Steel Plate using a technique on which the surface has been partially roughened to provide for shading in some areas, and partially scraped smooth, giving a lighter effect in other areas. The technique was widely used in the 17th, 18th, and early 19th centuries, typically for the reproduction of important paintings. This historic example is an exceptional, very clean well executed fine printed impression from the Colonial Era, having nice eye appeal and is of "museum" quality.
