      Est: €1,800 - €2,000

Italian school; following models of GIUSEPPE MAZZOLINI (Italy, 1806-1876), 19th century. "Maternal care", 1865. Oil on canvas. Relined. It has slight damage, Repainting and restorations on the pictorial surface and damage to the frame. Measurements: 100 x 73 cm; 119 x 93 cm (frame). The academic painter Giuseppe Mazzolini was inspired on numerous occasions by the Renaissance masters. Copying the classics was a frequent exercise among the painters of neoclassicism. Often to sell them to travelers from abroad. This painting in turn is made by a copyist. Future artists had the opportunity to learn by copying the works of the great masters. Despite being a very common practice during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, today the Prado Museum is the only museum in the capital that admits copyists in a reduced way so that they can not interrupt the transit of visitors. Maternity was a recurring theme during the 19th century, which was based in a certain way on a religiosity based on the figure of the Virgin and Child. The representation of maternity seeks a theme of kind and sweet character, in most cases in a warm atmosphere, where the happiness of the home is appreciated, as in the case of this painting where the treatment of light and color take us to the aforementioned atmosphere. The painting stands out for its realistic finish that can be seen both in the features of the protagonists, as in the clothing that inscribes the piece in an aesthetic trend of costumbrista character. It presents slight flaws, Repainting and restorations on the pictorial surface and damage to the frame.

      Est: €2,500 - €3,000

After RAFAEL SANZIO (Urbino, 1483 - Rome, 1520). GIUSEPPE MAZZOLINI (Italy, 1806-1876) "Madonna of the Chair". Oil on canvas. Signed. It has craquelure on the painting and treated woodworm marks on the frame. Size: 74 cm. diameter; 120 x 120 cm. (frame). The academic painter Giuseppe Mazzolini was inspired on numerous occasions by the Renaissance masters. Copying the classics was a frequent exercise among neoclassical painters. Raphael Sanzio's "Madonna della seggiola" (Madonna of the Chair) has been reproduced in this composition with ease and alacrity. Within a round format, respecting the original tondo, the three figures (the Infant Jesus, Mary and Saint John the Baptist) relate to each other with gestures and glances. The warm colours are velvety to emulate the softness of the fabrics. The gentle faces are modelled by a nuanced light. Raphael's models were peasants because, according to legend, the painter wanted to immortalise a little girl who helped a friar to chase away wolves. The friar promised the girl immortality, which was fulfilled when Raphael portrayed her sitting on the chair whose wood came from the tree the friar had climbed to escape the wolves.

    • Giuseppe Mazzolini, Portrait of Pope Julius II (after Raphael)
      Nov. 19, 2022

Giuseppe Mazzolini, Portrait of Pope Julius II (after Raphael)

      Est: €2,400 - €4,800

Portrait of Pope Julius II (after the painting by Raphael from 1511/12). 1842. Oil on canvas. 107 x 88 cm. Inscribed and dated on the reverse: G.MAZZOLINI 1842. Framed. There are several versions of Raphael's portrait of the Pope, on which this work is based, in the National Gallery in London, the Galleria Borghese in Rome and the Städel Museum in Frankfurt, among others. With the image of Julius II, Raphael created the binding portrait of this important Renaissance pope and at the same time a type of representation that was to remain binding for many portraits of subsequent popes. Pope Julius is not presented here in liturgical robes, but in the situation of a private audience, for which he is seated in an armchair.
