ARTIST: EILEEN MAYO (1906-1994) SIZE: 25 1/8 x 39 3/4 in./63.8 x 101 cm PRINTER: McLaren, Melbourne DESCRIPTION: There's something completely alien yet comforting about the Sturt's Desert Pea: the droopy blood-red plants, with their black bulbous centers, can be found draped across the Mars-like soils of the Australian Outback. Aborigines have long known of the plant; they roast the seeds and eat them straight, or make cakes by grinding and baking the seeds. In the early '60s it was named the floral emblem of South Australia; as an artistic subject it was a natural choice for Eileen Mayo, an English-born artist who emigrated to Australia in 1952 and became a crucial part of Australia's postwar print revival. Condition A: minor overpainting and repaired pin holes in corners. A vibrant and exotic view of "Longspined Butterfly-fish & Heron Island Volute," as well as some of the bright coral that inhabits the Great Barrier Reef. One of Australia''s most renowned attractions, the Great Barrier Reef was the subject of a handful of posters during the 1930s. Percy Trompf and Gert Selheim both designed images focusing on the extraordinary natural beauty of this wonder of the natural world. Dame Eileen Mayo was born in Britain and studied under Henry Moore at the Chelsea Polytechnic, as well as Fernand Léger at the Académie Montmartre. Throughout her life in England, Australia and New Zealand, she was a painter, illustrator and printmaker, designing magazines, tapestries, stamps and posters. She moved to Australia in 1953 and designed a series of posters highlighting some of the continent''s exotic wildlife including kangaroos and koalas.

        Australia / Sturt's Desert Pea. ca. 1962

        Est: $1,400 - $1,700

Artist: EILEEN MAYO (1906-1994) Size: 25 x 39 3/4 in./63.6 x 101 cm McLaren, Melbourne There's something completely alien, yet cute-comforting about the Sturt's Desert Pea, if you find a cluster or a carpet of the these droopy blood-red plants, with their black bulbous centers, draped across the Mars-like soils of the Australian Outback. Artist: EILEEN MAYO (1906-1994) Size: 25 1/8 x 39 3/4 in./64 x 101 cm McLarens, Melbourne Eileen Mayo is a superb illustrator of Australian flora and fauna, and here she produces a quiet bit of witty polyphony in this stylized, almost Audubon-esque lithograph. Cockatoos are the birds of Australia: the most ancient relative of the animal, which lived 23 million years ago, was discovered Down Under, and Australia hosts 11 of the world's 21 wild species. Here she places a red-tailed black cockatoo, also known as a Banksian cockatoo, upon a branch of banksia, a flowering plant critically important to both the food chain in the Australian bush, and the nation's cut-flower industry. The convergence of the nation's most famous bird, and one of its most important plants, with the brand of Qantas rather flies home the point of Qantas's essentiality to Australia's nature.
