Oil on panel, unsigned, indistinctly inscribed with a number lower left. 10 3/4 x 14 1/4 in., 13 3/4 x 17 1/2 in. (frame). Note: The story of the Biblical figure of Hagar (or Agar) is found in the Old Testament. Purchased as a slave in Egypt, Hagar was the maid to Abraham's wife, Sarah, who was childless. Sarah gave Hagar to her husband as a concubine to bear him an heir, his son Ishmael. When Hagar became pregnant, her personality changed from meek to arrogant causing her to receive very bad treatment from Sarah. She fled into the wilderness where she was found by an angel who told her to return home to give birth to her son. Many years after the birth of Ishmael, Sarah became pregnant and gave birth to Isaac. Fearing that Ishmael would be considered an heir alongside her own child by Abraham, Sarah banished Hagar and Ishmael to the desert. Die Geschichte der Jungfrau. 6 Radierungen. Je ca. 22,6 x 31,3 cm. Robert-Dumesnil 16-21 je I (von II). Wz. Trauben mit angehängtem GM. Henri Mauperché war vor allem ein vielbeschäftigter Landschaftsmaler, der für den französischen Hof und für die Pariser Aristokratie arbeitete. Nebenbei beschäftigte er sich auch als Graphiker und schuf zwischen 1639 und 1656 etwa fünfzig Radierungen. Es handelt sich vorwiegend um topographische Ansichten und religiöse Szenen, die in Ideallandschaften situiert sind. Mauperché war Schüler Louis de Boullognes, mit dem er im Jahre 1634 nach Rom reiste. Zu seinem engeren Bekanntenkreis zählten so bedeutende Künstlerpersönlichkeiten wie Claude Lorrain, Sébastien Bourdon und Herman van Swanevelt, was sich auch in seinen graphischen Arbeiten widerspiegelt. - Prachtvolle, prägnante und atmophärische Frühdrucke mit zahlreichen Wischkritzeln und delikatem Plattenton. Mit breitem Rand um die Plattenkante. Lediglich geringfügige Gebrauchsspuren, unbedeutend fleckig sowie Spuren einer alten Albummontage links im weißen Rand, sonst in tadelloser und vollkommener Erhaltung. MAUPERCHE h: 27 w: 36,50 cm Provenance : Chez Didier Aaron & Cie, Paris ; Acquis auprès de cette galerie par l'actuel propriétaire en 2012 ; Collection particulière, Paris Commentaire : Ce passage de l'Ancien Testament illustrant Agar et l'ange n'est en réalité qu'un prétexte pour peindre un délicat paysage qui égale par sa palette subtile les plus belles réalisations de Pierre Patel ou de Laurent de La Hyre. Extrêmement rares sont les peintures d'Henri Mauperché, artiste pourtant important de son vivant puisqu'il fut un des membres fondateurs de l'Académie royale en 1648 puis professeur en 1655. De son voyage en Italie il retiendra la poésie de la lumière du Sud et les leçons de Claude Gellée. Plusieurs éléments pour des décors qu'il réalisa nous sont parvenus, le plus célèbre d'entre eux étant le Paysage au pont peint pour le cabinet de l'Amour à l'Hôtel Lambert et actuellement conservé au musée du Louvre. Ses paysages côtoyaient dans les décors de boiseries les œuvres de Vouet, Blanchard ou Bourdon. Notre petit panneau délicatement préparé au revers est un émouvant témoignage de sa manière précieuse et profondément poétique.
