        Bernard Sougeron Mattox (American/Louisiana)

        Est: $1,800 - $2,500

Bernard Sougeron Mattox (American/Louisiana, b. 1954), "Village of the Poet Series", oil and mixed media on canvas, signed lower right, "Brunner Gallery, Covington" label with artist and title en verso, 40 in. x 30 in., unframed. Provenance: Brunner Gallery, Covington, LA. Note: New Orleans-born artist Bernard Mattox uses symbolism and texture to relay his complex internal world through his canvases. His practice of digging inward to bring forth the subjects of his work is a process that he refers to as “the archeology of solitude.” As a student of anthropology and geology at Tulane, he traveled through Latin America in the 1970s to study the ancient ruins. The experience would leave a lasting impression on his approach to his work. Originally a ceramicist, Mattox considers himself mostly self-taught when it comes to painting. Using mixed media, including clay and natural objects, he packs his canvases with rich glyphs and symbols, mixing the abstract with the figurative, which results in works saturated with layers of visual stimuli as seen in the lot offered here.
