    After Teodoro Matteini (Italian, 1754-1831) A pair of paintings depicting two scenes from Orlando Furioso Oil on canvas 49-1/2 x 42 inches (125.7 x 106.7 cm) (oval) PROVENANCE: Cedric Dupont Antiques, West Palm Beach, Florida; Private collection, acquired from the above. The original works by Matteini, dated circa 1795, depict two scenes from Ludovico Ariosto's 16th-century epic, Orlando Furioso. The romance between Angelica and Medoro, shown in the present work scratching their names into a tree, inspired future adaptations of Ariosto's tale, focused solely on their love.     (Pistoia, 1753 - Venezia, 1831) Angelica e Medoro Olio su tela, cm 136X162 Il dipinto raffigura la celebre scena dell'Orlando Furioso di Ludovico Ariosto, con Angelica, principessa asiatica alla corte di Carlo Magno giace sul grembo del suo amante, il cavaliere saraceno Medoro, mentre scrive i loro nomi sul tronco di un albero. L'autore Teodoro Matteini fu dedito principalmente a dipingere soggetti storici in stile neoclassico e si formì con il padre Ippolito e con il patrocinio di Domenico Corvi si trasferì a Roma nella bottega di Anton Raphael Mengs, fino a quando non fondì il suo studio e nel 1802 fu eletto professore di pittura all'Accademia di Belle Arti di Venezia.     MATTEINI, TEODORO 1754 Pistoia - 1831 Venedig - zugeschrieben Angelica und Medoro. Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert. 41,5 x 35,5cm. im oval. Rahmen. Das Thema der beiden Liebenden, die Ihren Namen in eine Baumrinde einritzen, geht zurück auf die Ezählungen des italienischen Humanisten Ludovico Ariosto (1474-1533), die er in seinem Hauptwerk "Orlando Furioso" beschreibt. Nach Vorlage des Gemäldes von Teodoro Matteini wurde durch den Florentiner Raphael Morghen 1795 ein großformatiger Stich verlegt.. MATTEINI, TEODORO 1754 Pistoia - 1831 Venice - attributed Angelica and Medoro. Oil on canvas. Relined. 41,5 x 35,5cm. In oval. Framed. The subject of the two lovers who carve their names into the bark of a tree is described in "Orlando Furioso", the major work of the Italian humanist Ludovico Ariosto (1474-1533). After Teodoro Matteini submitted his painting the Florentine Raphael Morghen fabricated a large-sized engraving in 1795.
