Gordon Matta-Clark Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1945 - d. 1978

(born 1945 New York City; died 1978) American artist. A student of architecture and son of Surrealist artist Roberto Matta, Gordon Matta-Clark disapproved of architecture’s loftiness and disconnect with the everyday world. He became part of a movement of artists that used atypical techniques and untraditional mediums in their artwork. Dubbed “anarchitecture”, Matta-Clark would remove sections of rundown buildings, exposing the interior and displaying those cut pieces in the gallery 112 Greene Street. These “building cuts” were temporary, the derelict buildings often being torn down a few weeks after being used; his work living on as architectural fragments, photographs and film. Some of Matta-Clark’s most famous works include Splitting, in which he made a one inch wide cut straight through the middle of a suburban house in New Jersey, and Office Baroque, in which he cut an oval that travels from street level to the attic of a decrepit building in Antwerp. His work provided insight into the 1970s; a period of crumbling cities and suburban life that was less than ideal. Despite the pessimistic connotations, Matta-Clark was still able to find beauty in the least likely places. While he had a very productive career it was cut short when Matta-Clark died of cancer at only 35 years old.

'Walls Paper'. New York, Buffallo Press, 1973. In-8°. 144 split pages. Pages split horizontally into two sections, as designed. Each of the pages reproduces a colour-tinted black-and-white photograph. Printed wrappers with photographic reproductions on front and rear covers. Early in 1972 Matta-Clark had taken various black and white photographs of semi-demolished project houses in the Bronx and the Lower East Side of New York City. At the time, only the facades of the buildings had been removed, so the artist’s photographs capture the interior walls of the houses; walls either covered in flaking paint or the remnants of wallpaper. These photographs, artificially heightened by Matta-Clark, were initially exhibited at a space on Greene Street, New York in 1972. The images were not presented individually, however, but printed on long strips of newspaper hung from the ceiling down the entire height of the walls. The artist’s book, Walls paper, published the following year, reproduces these coloured prints, and again the images are sliced into strips, with each page systematically cut in half horizontally. "Office Baroque - 1977 Ernest Van Dijckkaai, 1 - Antwerpen. Project by Gordon Matta-Clark for the I.C.C. Antwerpen". 1977. Vintage halftone print. 90 x 63 cm. Signed and editioned 61/250 by the artist in black felt-tip pen in lower left. Gordon Matta-Clark is considered one of the most important and influential American conceptual artists of the Deconstructivism movement and became especially known for his "Cuttings" and "Splittings" in the 1970s. These were cuts he made with a chainsaw through ceilings, floors, facades or whole buildings. He also removed large building parts ("Interventions") as seen in the image offered here. These temporary artworks are only preserved on film and photographs which are collected and exhibited in international museums such as the Guggenheim Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Fotomuseum Winterthur, Switzerland. The "Office Baroque" project depicted in this work was carried out at "the headquarters of a shipping company ... the site of a new building; after being obliged to make major changes in the original project, the work was done totally internally, using all five floors and the roof. (...) The result is a series of arabesque slices opening the whole building to an ever-changing promenade of internal views. Photo assemblages piece together views of the roof, facade, top floor, third floor in plan and detail of a "double-arc intersect" looking down through four floors (text from lower left of sheet). - A few light handling creases, stronger fold in upper left corner, some light foxing spots, mostly near edges, smudge near left edge in upper portion, otherwise in very good condition. Matta-Clark, Gordon: Jacob's Ladder

    Est: €16,000 - €18,000

Matta-Clark, Gordon: Jacob's Ladder "Jacob's Ladder". 1977. Vintage cibachrome print. 1000 x 700 cm. Signed and dedicated by the artist in black marker in upper left edge. Framed behind glass in original frame of the documenta exhibition 2005. The photo object "Jacob's Ladder" is based on Matta-Clark's same performance at the documenta 6 in Kassel (1977), one year before his untimely death. Like most of Matta-Clarks's projects the concept of this spectacular performance was short-lived and ephemeral and it found a new expression in this photograph. Therefore, while it is part of the installation in Kassel, it is also an independent work in itself with a meaning beyond its original context. With good reason Michael Glasmeier chose exactly this work for the exhibition "Discreet Energies" which was shown at the Museum Fridericianum in Kassel on the occasion of the documenta's 50th anniversary in 2005. A characteristic of this photograph are the horizontal cracks (or cuttings) which are typical of Matta-Clark's work and are an important part of this object. Normally a cibachrome print is very flexible and breaks only when exposed to low temperatures. Matta-Clark purposely shipped this print relatively unprotected during winter from New York to Hamburg to expose it to the stress of cold and shipping. The traces of the journey are thus inscribed in the work and have become an integral part of it. At the upper left Matta-Clark dedicated the photo to his coworker Michael Schrader who worked for him as part of the documenta team (For Michael for helping make this possible. Best wishes Gordon Matta-Clark). Today Gordon Matta-Clark is considered one of the most important and influential American conceptual artists of the Deconstructivism movement and he became especially known for his "Cuttings" and "Splittings" in the 1970s. These were cuts he made with a chainsaw through ceilings, floors, facades or whole buildings. He also removed large building parts (Interventions) - not always with the permission of the owner. These temporary artworks are only preserved on film and photographs which are collected and exhibited in international museums such as: Guggenheim Museum, New York; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Museum of Modern Art, New York; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Fotomuseum Winterthur, Switzerland and many others - Stronger horizontal cracks in emulsion throughout, some soiling near edges, a few spots and a few chips in edges. With: Expertise by Prof. Dr. Michael Glasmeier who curated the exhibition Discreet Energies 50 Years documenta 1955 - 2005 in Kassel 2005. Best wishes Gordon Matta-Clark). New York; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Museum of Modern Art, New York; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, CA.; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Fotomuseum Winterthur u.v.a. - Stärkere horizontale "Cracks", leichte Schmutzspuren an den Rändern, ein paar Flecke und winzige Abblätterungen an den Rändern. GORDON MATTA-CLARK [Walls paper. New York: Buffalo Press, 1973.] Small oblong folio (255 x 185mm). 30 leaves of tinted photographic plates, 2 of these folding. Original photo-illustrated card covers (some creases and small dampstains). Provenance: Gordon Matta-Clark (presentation inscription to:) -- Robert Whitman (artist, b.1935; by repute). RARE PRESENTATION COPY OF A PREVIOUSLY UNKNOWN VARIANT, inscribed by Matta-Clark. The artist signs for himself and Carol Gooden, with whom he had co-founded SoHo's Food restaurant -- a regular haunt for downtown Manhattan artists. Though clearly based on Walls paper this could be seen as a work in its own right: this version comprises a tighter selection of images, and shows one half of each split building. The covers use one of the same images as the edition but printed in reverse, and the verso of the covers are blank rather than printed. cf. The Photobook, vol. II, pp. 131, 148-9.
