    Nov. 20, 2024

    Attributed to Jean Mathieu,  French 1749-1815-  Le Serment d'Amour, after Jean-Honoré Fragonard;

    Est: £180 - £220

    Attributed to Jean Mathieu,  French 1749-1815-  Le Serment d'Amour, after Jean-Honoré Fragonard;  coloured engraving on metal, bears signatures 'Mathieu' (within the plate, lower right) and 'fragonard pinxt' (within the plate, lower left), titled 'LE SERMENT D'AMOUR' (within the plate, lower edge), 29.8 x 23.4 cm.  Provenance:  Property from a European Private Collection.  Note:  The present engraving is evidently related to Mathieu's engraving on paper of the same scene, after Jean-Honoré Fragonard's (1732-1806) original painting, now in Waddesdon Manor. This work is in the same orientation as the printed version, and so appears to have been made as an engraving on metal, a separate work of art in its own right, rather than a printing matrix.
