    Landscape with a goatherd and a ruin; second state with birds in the sky. Lettered within image, at top left: "Cor. Matteus fecit". With the publishers address (hardly visible) of Frans van Wijngaerde bottom right. The works of his Flemish etcher Matteus are rare and very hard to find. The quality of his work however is excellent.

    Brustbildnis des Kupferstechers und Verlegers Frans van den Wyngaerde. Radierung. 8,6 x 6,6 cm. 1637. Weigel 9, Bartsch Rembrandt II, S. 174, Nr. 93, Wurzbach 9, Hollstein 9 II. -- -- Das außerordentlich seltene Freundschaftsbildnis zeigt den Antwerpener Kupferstecher und Verleger Frans van den Wyngaerde zur Brust. Matteus war vor allem als Landschaftsmaler tätig und schuf daneben ein sehr kleines druckgraphisches Œuvre von insgesamt 9 Radierungen, darunter das vorliegende Porträt. Der dargestellte Frans van den Wyngaerde war Schüler des Paulus Pontius und Besitzer von einem der bedeutendsten Kupferstichverlage im Antwerpener 17. Jahrhundert. Neben Reproduktionsgraphik nach Rubens, Anthony van Dyck und anderen zeitgenössischen flämischen Künstlern, veröffentlichte Wyngaerde auch druckgraphische Arbeiten prominenter ausländischer Künstler wie beispielsweise Jusepe de Ribera. Das lebendig observierte Bildnis fehlt in nahezu allen namhaften musealen Sammlungen, darunter das Rijksprentenkabinet, Amsterdam und das British Museum, London. Ganz ausgezeichneter, gleichmäßiger Druck mit breitem Rand.
