    JOSÉ MATAIX MONLLOR (Alcoy, 1882 - 1952). "Still life". Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower right corner. Measurements: 55 x 73 cm; 71 x 89 cm (frame). José Mataix Monllor was a Valencian painter, a pupil of the Alcoy painters Fernando Cabrera Cantó and Emilio Sala. In 1901 his landscape La Mariola won first prize at the painting exhibition of the Industrial School of Alcoy. In 1904 he lived in Madrid and attended the workshop of the painter Emilio Sala as a pupil. He submitted several paintings to the National Exhibition of Fine Arts, which earned him an honourable mention for his painting "Les dotze". Later, his family asked him to return to Alcoy to take over the family business. His forced return to Alcoy reduced his chances of continuing to make a name for himself as a painter in Madrid. On his return he was taught by Fernando Cabrera Cantó at the Real Fabrica de Paños de Alcoy, of whom he became perhaps his most faithful disciple. José Mataix painted numerous typical Alcoy landscapes, of his region and of different parts of the Valencian Community, all of them from life. His works range from incipient neo-impressionism to paintings with a modernist influence. In 1944 he was awarded the first medal in the First Provincial Exhibition of Fine Arts by the Provincial Council of Alicante. In 1946 he held an anthological exhibition at the Círculo Industrial de Alcoy and in 1947 in Bilbao. He held numerous exhibitions of his work in Alcoy, Valencia and Alicante, and is considered one of the continuators of the Alcoy school of painting, especially after the death of Fernando Cabrera, his teacher.
