  • Jan Massys, Rest on the Flight into Egypt

Jan Massys, Rest on the Flight into Egypt

    Est: €18,000 - €24,000

Jan Massys was the eldest son of Quentin Massays, and unlike his brother Cornelis, Jan's style is much closer to that of his father. His paintings can be stylistically placed into two stylistic groups: Works corresponding to the first Antwerp period before 1544, the year he was accused of heresy and banished from the town, and the others dating after 1558. Most of his production belongs to the second Antwerp period, the present panel being one of the latest or even maybe the last he achieved. The subject is taken from the apocryphal Gospel of Pseudo Matthew. The composition has been carefully designed in two opposing right-angled triangles. The right figure in the foreground shows the Holy Family taking some rest at a well while in the opposite one a vast panoramic landscape crossed by a winding river unfolds towards the far horizon.

  • Follower of Jan Massys (1509-1575), Susanna, Oil, pres. c. 1600

Follower of Jan Massys (1509-1575), Susanna, Oil, pres. c. 1600

    Est: €8,000 - €10,400

Oil on wood, parqueted Netherlands, presumably around 1600 Mannerism Follower of Jan Massys (1509-1575?) – Flemish painter of mannerism Dimensions: 104.2 x 90.6 cm Frame: 121.5 x 90.6 cm Prominent topic of the time, depicting Susanna and the Elders; adapted to the style of master Jan Massys Estimate by Auctionata Expert: 16,000 Euro This mannerist panel painting represents the story of Susanna and the Elders from the Book of Daniel. The beautiful, devout Susanna bathes unattended in her garden while two lustful elders secretly observe her. The painting has been rendered exceptionally skillful, with a wealth of details that stretch far into the background. Condition: The painting is in a good, restored condition, consistent with age. It bears natural signs of age and wear. Under UV-light it appears that the area of the group of figures and the sky has been extensively painted over. The surface displays craquelure and along the edges slight, partial abrasion due to framing can be seen. The dimensions of the panel are 104.2 x 90.6 cm. The framed dimensions are 121.5 x 90.6 cm.
