  • Herve Masson, Mauritania (1919 - 1980), Horse Race, lithograph, 19 3/4"H x 25 3/4"W

    Herve Masson, Mauritania (1919 - 1980), Horse Race, lithograph, 19 3/4"H x 25 3/4"W

    Est: $50 - $100

Herve Masson Mauritania, (1919 - 1980) Horse Race lithograph Signed lower right, numbered 10/275 lower left. Biography from Koze.mu: Hervé Masson first dabbled in the arts at the age of 19. Playing around with wood engraving, he illustrated a collection of poems called "Les Autres Nourritures", written by his older brother, Loys Masson. In 1941, he started painting and thereafter hosting art exhibitions. Through cernacles held at his home in Curepipe, he rubbed shoulders with other great Mauritian writers and artists of the time, including Malcolm de Chazal, Pierre de Sornay, Marcel Cabon, and Serge Constantin, to name a few. In 1950, he settled down in France with his family and, two years later, started a weekly column for the Mauritian newspaper, Le Mauricien. He advocated for Mauritian independence. A feat Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam would go on to thank him for. He returned to Mauritius in 1970 as an artistic adviser for the Ministry of Education. Driven by his passion for politics, he joined the MMM in 1971 and became Editor-in-Chief of their daily newspaper Le Militant. Soon after, the MMM, backed by unions, called a series of strikes, causing the government to declare a state of emergency that lasted until 1976. Hervé, along with the leadership of the MMM, became political prisoners for 10 months, finally getting released in December 1972. He eventually returned to Paris in 1977, continuing his successful career as a painter and writer, before passing away in May 1990. In line with his 100-year celebrations, Lekip Kozé checked out the art expo, "Hervé Masson, l'art du trait, la puissance de la couleur", at the ICAIO in Port Louis, which is on display up until 26 July 2019. Here we find a collection of 64 artworks, grouped under five themes: horse racing, landscapes, text illustrations, androgynous people and women. The fascinating collection depicts life seen through his mind, with an emphasis on shapes and colours, be it through a landscape painting or through the sensual curves of a woman. Daughter of Hervé Masson and the organiser of the 100-year celebrations, Brigitte Masson tells us: "In the absence of an art museum where the work of my father can be seen at all times, we keep his memory alive by organising these events." She adds: "What I admired the most about him was his commitment to social justice and freedom. He was also a politician who didn't hesitate to put his artistic career on hold to fight for his beliefs. In the first art expo at the IFM we showcased the drawings he made when he was in political detention in 1971-1972."
