Michael Massie (Inuit-Metis-Scottish, b. 1962) Gray Tea, 1996 silver and walrus ivory signed and dated on base height 6-3/4 inches x length 7-3/4 inches x width 6 inches Exhibited: May 5 - September 4, 2006. Silver and Stone: The Art of Michael Massie. The Provincial Art Gallery, St. John's, Newfoundland. Published: Hickey, Gloria: Silver and Stone: The Art of Michael Massie (2006: 52-53) [copy included] The crescent shape of the ulu has inspired the design on Michael Massie's silver work for at least the past ten years. It helped to establish his recognizable style of geometric shapes, elegant lines, and a contemporary character for Inuit art. Both boa-tea (1996) and gray tea (1996) are based on ulu forms, although strikingly different...gray tea is irregular, squat, and has a vertical, carved walrus tusk handle. The ulu shape is discernible from above, but from the rear, it is a cubist's adept collision of angles. From the side, the squat silver form sits on [walrus] feet that, according to Massie, take the inspiration from Marvin the Martian, a cartoon character from Bugs Bunny. "Whenever Marvin got zapped all you could see was his feet poking out from under his helmet--that's the Martian look I wanted." (Silver and Stone, 2006: 52)

MICHAEL MASSIE (1962-), HAPPY VALLEY GOOSE BAY, LABRADORCREATIVITY OF THE SPIRIT: DISTANT RELATIONSstone, bone, ebony, brass, signed and dated “Massie 13 Jan. 8”9" x 8" x 5" — 22.9 x 20.3 x 12.7 cm.Provenance:One of the most important artists from Labrador and easily one of the most inventive and skilled. Massie is known for his creative interpretations of teapots and mixed media works. In 1996 he gained recognition in the United States and began a seven year representation by Alaska on Madison Gallery in New York City. Later while represented by Spirit Wrestler Gallery in Vancouver, he was encouraged to work in the more traditional medium of stone. While his choice of materials and approach to carving would evolve over the years his theme of family and Inuit tradition would remain fairly consistent. Massie’s use of a once popular technique in France of inlaying metal in tiny points is not the only European influence evident in this work. Like Pitaloosie and Karoo before him, “Massie estimates that his own style of distortion owes as much to Picasso as to Inuit shamanism”.Literature:Gloria Hickey, Silver & Stone: The Art of Michael Massie, Inuit Art Quarterly, Winter 2006, page 25Estimate: $4,000—6,000

I don’t think that I was trying to replicate those pieces of the ‘50’s and ‘60’s... but was trying to get that idea of the relief across with the sparse detail that is given to the man. He emerges from the stone (in this case from the back of the owl), they become one - he melds into the owl or the owl melds into him. It doesn’t really matter which is which as we are all creatures that are connected in some way or another.” Massie continues, describing the man as being in a trance - obvious from the way “his eyes are rolled back. His hands have become wings holding the drum and the drum stick.” He also addresses the ‘Ambivalent’ theme of the work as referring to the two sides coexisting no matter how different they are.Estimate: $3,000—5,000
