  • FEDERICO ARMANDO BELTRÁN MASSES (Güira de Melena, Cuba, 1885 - Barcelona, 1949). "The meadow". Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower right corner.

FEDERICO ARMANDO BELTRÁN MASSES (Güira de Melena, Cuba, 1885 - Barcelona, 1949). "The meadow". Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower right corner.

    Est: €7,000 - €8,000

FEDERICO ARMANDO BELTRÁN MASSES (Güira de Melena, Cuba, 1885 - Barcelona, 1949). "The meadow". Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower right corner. Measurements: 79 x 97 cm; 101 x 115 cm (frame). The work presents an open field, populated by a large number of people, dressed in the fashion of the popular classes of Madrid in the nineteenth century on holidays. It can therefore be deduced that the work depicts one of the main celebrations of the patron saint of the city, which takes place in the so-called "meadow of San Isidro" and has been immortalized, among others, by Goya. Beltrán Masses, despite his Cuban origin, studied art in Spain. He began his training at La Llotja School in Barcelona, and was a disciple of Joaquín Sorolla. In 1905 he moved to Madrid to study first-hand the works of the masters in the Prado Museum. In 1916 he settled in Paris, where he achieved great commercial success, receiving commissions from illustrious people in the United States, Belgium, Italy and India. He was a member of the Royal Academies of Madrid, Barcelona, Zaragoza, Lisbon, Cordoba and Malaga. He was also a member of the Hispanic Society of New York, the Institute of France, the Academy of Fine Arts in Paris, knight of the Order of Malta and the French Legion of Honor, and general curator of the International Art Exhibition in Bordeaux in 1928. He participated in many exhibitions and shows, such as the one held at the Sala Parés in Barcelona in 1910, the Hispano-French Fine Arts Exhibition in Paris in 1919 and the Venice Biennial in 1921. In 1924 he received the Cordon de Isabel la Católica, and in 1934 he exhibited his works at the Royal Watercolour Society in London. Among his official commissions, the portrait he painted of King Alfonso XIII stands out. In 2007 a retrospective exhibition of Federico Beltrán Masses was held at the Casa Lis Museum of Art Nouveau and Art Deco. Beltrán Masses devoted himself to both landscape and figure painting, although towards the end of his career he focused fully on portraiture. He developed a totally unique style, influenced by the great Spanish masters but decidedly modern. Works by Beltrán Masses are currently preserved in the Prado Museum, the Jeu de Paume Museum in Paris, the Casa Lis in Salamanca and the Reina Sofía in Madrid.

  • Large Lady Nude, Federico Beltran Masses (1885-1949), Cuban school of the turn of the century, late 19th century
    Apr. 25, 2024

Large Lady Nude, Federico Beltran Masses (1885-1949), Cuban school of the turn of the century, late 19th century

    Est: €4,000 - €4,500

Oil on canvas. Measurements: 97 x 147 cm framed. Federico Beltrán Masses (1885-1949) was a Spanish painter born in Güira de la Melena, Cuba. His father was a Spanish soldier and part of his maternal family was Cuban. Federico Beltran Masses can be placed between Art Deco and Symbolism, with some traditional roots in his early days. It is in the portrait where the painter mostly develops his work. He evokes and recreates his protagonists, seeking the beauty and the best in each person. He seeks for them fantasy, memory, allegory, the exotic, his dreams... it reflects the spirit and philosophy of life of the person portrayed. Beltran Masses does not seek to paint reality. Bibliography: Origin: Basque private collection. Federico Beltran Massés: a painter at the court of Hollywood: 2011. Catalog of the exhibition held at the Museu Diocesà of Barcelona. FEDERICO BELTRÁN MASSES (Güira de Melena, Cuba, 1885 - Barcelona, 1949). "L'Ile d'amour, Les fleurs du mal". Oil on cardboard. Signed on the lower right. With Artur Ramón Gallery label on the back. Measurements: 28 x 23 cm; 48 x 43 cm (frame). Taking the title from Baudelaire's famous book of poems, Beltrán Masses represents here the lesbian island (the kingdom of Lesbos) of which the French poet speaks. Innocent and jovial Arcadia of tradition is reinvented. As in the cursed poet, the latency of something fateful can be appreciated, as well as the burden of a rich symbolism associated with Eros, making pleasure and transgression inseparable. Fauvism, Matisse, the Nabis... are some of the references that are stirred in the cocktail of this painter, capable of creating his own style. Beltrán Masses, despite his Cuban origin, studied art in Spain. He began his training at the Escuela de La Llotja in Barcelona, and was a disciple of Joaquín Sorolla. In 1905 he moved to Madrid to study at first hand the works of the masters in the Prado Museum. Est: €28,000 - €56,000

FEDERICO BELTRAN MASSES Guaira de la Melena, Cuba 1885-Barcelona 1949 Miss May Fleishhacker. 1925 Oil on canvas Signed and dated 1925 Measures 111 x 107 cm May Belle Greenbaum was born in 1884 in San Francisco, where her father, Sigmund Greenbaum, was involved in the world bank of this prosperous city. She married Herbert Fleishhacker, one of the leading financiers of his day, in 1905, and they both enjoyed their role as leading philanthropists and figures in San Francisco society. In 1924, another sign of where the Fleishhackers were and who they were, Herbert's bank (then Anglo-Canadian Bank) was the largest lender to newspaper magnate William Randoloh Hearst. In fact, they had a complex business relationship without which the entire expansion of Hearst's media empire, especially intense in that year of 1924, would not be well understood. Thus, without an express contribution of money from Herbert, Hearst would have entered into collapse that same year. The Fleishhacker businesses were varied and prosperous; also strongly welded with public figures and local and regional politics, such as the Mayor of San Francisco, James "Sunny Jim" Rolph Jr. In 1924 they were at the top of the mountain and this status would last for almost ten years more, but one day this whole way of life changed as a result of a series of operations of dubious legality around the sales of some oil fields made in fraud by co-investors, and misfortunes were chained in the way that misfortunes are clustered modern day about a timely prey: lawsuits, liquidity crises and over-indebtedness included, as well as the effects of the disastrous economic policies that led to the Great Depression and continued through the New Deal. Of this state of affairs in America, it seems that only William Randoph Hearst pulled himself together for a time; but characters like Herbert and May Fleishhacker did not. We are left with the look of a self-confident May from the moments of prosperity, but there is no record of the look from the moments of anxiety of someone who, together with her husband, was everything at one time and of some objects that today the chronicle of a suggestive past.
