Masse A bust of a woman with scarf Original coloring and patina Height: 35.5 cm A very well executed work with a high degree of sensuality The bust shows a dark-skinned, oriental looking woman, who is cloaked in a black cloth that is placed around her head like a veil. Her long hair can be seen on both sides of her face. The face appears youthful and has a dreamy yet self-confident expression. It is distinguished by a high degree of plasticity. The lips are full and the eyes worked with a drill have emphasized eyelid rims. The woman's gaze is directed upwards. The bust rises above a base, on whose back the artist's signature can be read. Condition: The bust is in very good condition, consistent with age and bears minor signs of wear. The left rear corner is restored. In places surface abrasion and smaller bumps can as well as chips can be seen. René Charles Masse (1855-1913) Initially, the sculptor worked in his father's foundry, later in the studio of sculptor and stucco artist Frédéric Eugène Piat in Paris. After he had completed his apprenticeship, Masse worked for the family Friedrich Goldscheider in Paris, who had established a branch of its Porzellan-Manufactur und Majolica-Fabrik including a bronze workshop in Pairs in 1892. In the early 1890s he settled in Brienne-le-Château, where he operated a studio for small sculptures in ceramic and earthenware, which he had fired in the Faïencerie Mielle. His style, corresponding with the academic style, and naturalistic genre scenes meet the tastes of the time. The decorative aspect played a major role in his works, especially in his small-scale, polychrome works, which he tried to achieve mainly by their polychrome patina. In addition to his own designs Masse also reproduced works of other artists in a reduced format. In 1902 he settled in Troyes, where he lived and worked until his death.
