Francesc Masriera i Manovens (21 October 1842, Barcelona - 15 March 1902, Barcelona) was a Catalonian figure painter and goldsmith who was influenced by Orientalism.

He was born into a family of painters, set designers and silversmiths and began his artistic training in his father's workshop.[1] When he was only thirteen, he went to Geneva to learn the techniques for painting on enamel. In 1857, he and his brother Josep (who would also become a well-known painter) were apprenticed in the workshop of Josep Serra i Porsón [ca],[2] a professor at the Escola de la Llotja, followed in 1865 by a trip to London and Paris, where they may have briefly worked in the studios of Alexandre Cabanel.

He opened his first studio in 1871 and participated in the "Exposició General Catalana". The following year, he returned to Paris alone and established contact with Goupil & cie, one of the most important art dealerships at that time. He was awarded second prize at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts in 1878 with his painting "La esclava" (The Slave),[2] which was later purchased by King Alfonso XII.[1] In 1889, he was awarded a medal at the Exposition Universelle. For most of his life, he was active in the family jewelry business, Masriera y Hijos (later, Hermanos Masrieras).

Between 1882 and 1884, he and Josep built an elaborate workshop on Bailen Street, modeled after the ancient Temple of Augustus on Mont Tàber. It was designed by Josep Vilaseca i Casanovas. Flanking the entrance were statues of Eduardo Rosales and Marià Fortuny, created by Josep Reynés [ca]. The Masriera's combined art collections were kept there and it became a major cultural center, featuring dramatic performances as well as art shows. In 1932, it became the Teatre Studium and was later connected to the adjoining buildings. It is now a residence for the nuns of the "Petita Companyia del Cor Eucarístic de Jesús".[3]

As a jeweler, he was well known for his use of Plique-à-jour, a notoriously difficult technique. He was also an amateur playwright and a regular contributor to a weekly "magazine", El Recuerdo, created by his brother Josep and his friends, but never actually published.

Measurements: 33 x 21 cm; 43 x 31,5 cm (frame). In this portrait of lady with fan, the slender waist of the young woman is enhanced by a pink silk dress with chiffon and lace trim. The pamela, adorned with fine transparent cloth, frames a fresh and smiling face. The woman is silhouetted against a sky blue sky, which accentuates the almost volatile condition of the feminine essence when youth is in full bloom. With an audacious use of the brush, the author captures the vivacity of the expression and the sumptuous qualities of the costumes. Spanish painter, writer and goldsmith, he began his training in the jewelry workshop of his father José María Masriera and in that of José Serra y Porson. Always concerned about improving and approaching new horizons, he refined his technique after traveling to Geneva where he learned the enameling process, which will be one of the main hallmarks of his goldsmith designs. As for his facet as a painter, there is evidence that he traveled to Paris for the first time in 1865, where he went to Cabanel's workshop. On repeated occasions he visited the French capital, the epicenter of the artistic modernity of the time, where he acquired first-hand the rapid brushstrokes, luminosity and vivid chromatism of the first impressionists, features that can be seen in this magnificent painting. As can also be seen in the work presented here, Masriera had the ability to combine the freshness of the new plastic trends emerging in Paris at the time, with the long neoclassical tradition marked by the Academy: a careful dedication to drawing, the care of the composition and the rigorous study of the old masters. In fact, there is evidence that in the Louvre he devoted himself to copying the main works in order to acquire the mastery of the classics, and in Paris he participated in the Universal Exhibitions of 1867, 1878 and 1889. There is also evidence of his trips to Rome, where he began to paint Orientalist canvases. As a writer and columnist he collaborated in the magazine El Recuerdo. In Spain, he won the second medal at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts in 1878 for the work entitled La esclava, and also exhibited his works at the Bosch Gallery in Madrid in 1882 and at the Sala Parés in Barcelona in 1889. As we observe in this exquisite painting, Masriera's technique is characterized by the perfection of the drawing, the careful composition and a color full of strength and luminosity, which is manifested especially in the iridescence of the canvases. Son of the prestigious goldsmith José Masriera Vidal, and brother of the painters José and Luis Masriera, Francisco began his artistic training with his father, in the family jewelry workshop, and with the painter José Serra Porson. He then traveled to Geneva to learn the technique of enamel, although he gradually turned to painting, specializing in the execution of portraits. Around 1865 he moved to Paris, where he attended the workshop of Alexandre Cabanel and devoted himself to copying the great masters of the Louvre. Within his production of portraits stands out the one he made to the Queen Regent Maria Cristina with his son Alfonso XIII in 1888, which currently presides over the Hall of the Queen Regent of the Casa de la Ciudad in Barcelona. Close to the group of Spanish painters settled in the French capital, among them Francisco Miralles, Romà Ribera and Federico de Madrazo, his international projection was strengthened when he signed a contract with Goupil, the most important art dealer of the time, for the commercialization of his work. His paintings are characterized by the perfection of the drawing, the careful composition and a color full of strength and luminosity, which is manifested especially in the sunny tones of the canvases. This painter practiced a preciousness full of fantasy and decorative sense, in which the freshness of the color reminds us of the gallant painting of Watteau and Fragonard. In his studies, compositions and portraits he focused mainly on the female figure, represented in sumptuously ornamented environments and dressed in rich dresses, headdresses and orientalist jewelry. Francisco Masriera is represented in the Prado Museum, the Museum of San Telmo in San Sebastian, the Museum of Fine Arts of Alava, the National Museum of Art of Catalonia, the Abbey of Montserrat and the National Heritage, as well as in various private collections.

Measurements: 33 x 21 cm; 43 x 31,5 cm (frame). In this portrait of lady with fan, the slender waist of the young woman is enhanced by a pink silk dress with chiffon and lace trim. The pamela, adorned with fine transparent cloth, frames a fresh and smiling face. The woman is silhouetted against a sky blue sky, which accentuates the almost volatile condition of the feminine essence when youth is in full bloom. With an audacious use of the brush, the author captures the vivacity of the expression and the sumptuous qualities of the costumes. Spanish painter, writer and goldsmith, he began his training in the jewelry workshop of his father José María Masriera and in that of José Serra y Porson. Always concerned about improving and approaching new horizons, he refined his technique after traveling to Geneva where he learned the enameling process, which will be one of the main hallmarks of his goldsmith designs. As for his facet as a painter, there is evidence that he traveled to Paris for the first time in 1865, where he went to Cabanel's workshop. On repeated occasions he visited the French capital, the epicenter of the artistic modernity of the time, where he acquired first-hand the rapid brushstrokes, luminosity and vivid chromatism of the first impressionists, features that can be seen in this magnificent painting. As can also be seen in the work presented here, Masriera had the ability to combine the freshness of the new plastic trends emerging in Paris at the time, with the long neoclassical tradition marked by the Academy: a careful dedication to drawing, the care of the composition and the rigorous study of the old masters. In fact, there is evidence that in the Louvre he devoted himself to copying the main works in order to acquire the mastery of the classics, and in Paris he participated in the Universal Exhibitions of 1867, 1878 and 1889. There is also evidence of his trips to Rome, where he began to paint Orientalist canvases. As a writer and columnist he collaborated in the magazine El Recuerdo. In Spain, he won the second medal at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts in 1878 for the work entitled La esclava, and also exhibited his works at the Bosch Gallery in Madrid in 1882 and at the Sala Parés in Barcelona in 1889. As we observe in this exquisite painting, Masriera's technique is characterized by the perfection of the drawing, the careful composition and a color full of strength and luminosity, which is manifested especially in the iridescence of the canvases. He stood out for his preciousness full of fantasy, as well as for the freshness of his colors.

The protagonist of this female portrait wears a strapless dress that matches the jewelry and headdress that adorns her hair. She holds a handmade object in her hands while she stares at the viewer in a serious and concentrated gesture. The work demonstrates the attraction that the orientalist world professed in Spanish painters. Painter and silversmith, he began his artistic training in the workshop of his father, Josep Masriera Vidal. He then entered the School of Fine Arts of La Lonja in Barcelona, where he was influenced by the landscape painter Luis Rigalt, to finally complete his studies in Paris. As a painter he dedicated himself to detailed landscapes, usually inspired by the surroundings of San Andrés de Llavaneras, in the province of Barcelona. He participated in exhibitions in Barcelona, Madrid, Zaragoza, Munich, Berlin and many other cities. His successive trips to Paris brought him into contact with the different tendencies of French landscape painting, and he soon achieved success thanks to the works he presented at the International Exhibition in Paris (third medal) and at the National Fine Arts Exhibitions in Madrid (third medal in 1878 and 1897) and in Barcelona (first medal in 1909). He was an academician of Sciences and Arts (1873) and of the Fine Arts of Sant Jordi, and presided over the Artistic Circle. He published biographies of Catalan artists of the generation before his own, such as Luis Rigalt, Claudio Lorenzale and Francisco Miquel, as well as works on aesthetics such as "Influencia del estilo japonés en las artes europeas" (1885). He is represented in the Museo Nacional de Arte de Cataluña and the Museo del Prado among others, as well as in important international private collections.

Painter, writer and goldsmith, Francisco Masriera cultivated the genre of the portrait and the orientalist painting, and he is nowadays considered one of the best portrait painters who followed in the wake of Fortuny. The son of the prestigious goldsmith José Masriera Vidal and brother of the painters José and Luis Masriera, Francisco began his artistic training under his father's guidance in the family jewellery workshop and with the painter José Serra Porson. He then travelled to Geneva to learn the technique of enamelling, although he gradually turned to painting, specialising in portraits. His portraits include the one he painted of the Queen Regent Maria Cristina with her son Alfonso XIII in 1888, which currently presides over the Queen Regent's Hall in Barcelona's Casa de la Ciutadella. Close to the group of Spanish painters based in the French capital, including Francisco Miralles, Romà Ribera and Federico de Madrazo, his international reputation was strengthened when he signed a contract with Goupil, the most important art dealer of the day, to sell his work. His paintings are characterised by the perfection of the drawing, the careful composition and a colouring full of strength and luminosity, which is particularly evident in the sunny tones of the canvases. This painter practised a preciousness full of fantasy and decorative sense, in which the freshness of the colour is reminiscent of the gallant painting of Watteau and Fragonard. In his studies, compositions and portraits he focused mainly on the female figure, depicted in sumptuously ornamented settings and adorned with rich dresses, headdresses and orientalist jewellery. Francisco Masriera is represented in the Museo del Prado, the Museo de San Telmo in San Sebastián, the Museo de Bellas Artes de Álava, the Museo Nacional de Arte de Cataluña, the Museo de la Abadía de Montserrat and the Patrimonio Nacional, as well as in various private collections.

In this work the artist offers a delicate and courteous image, dominated by the prominence of a young woman. In spite of her facial features, the voluptuousness of her clothes both in form and colour, the lady's gesture is serious and expectant, as if she was trying to read the spectator. This idea is heightened by the slight smile on the young woman's face ... . It is worth noting that the lady is set against an ochre-coloured background with a pattern that is largely reminiscent of the screen in the work the artist dedicated to his wife, which is now in the collection of the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya. In this painting Masriera manages to capture a fleeting snapshot of the everyday life of the bourgeoisie of the time, an image full of charm and delicacy that captures the viewer's gaze. To do so, he used a realist aesthetic based on the plastic values of neoclassicism; in fact, the work shows a certain influence of the portrait Ingres painted of Mademoiselle Caroline Rivière, in which the sitter wears an ermine fur on her arms, in a manner very similar in composition to the present work. He then entered the La Lonja School of Fine Arts in Barcelona, where he was influenced by the landscape painter Luis Rigalt, and finally completed his studies in Paris. Francisco Masriera practised a preciousness full of fantasy and sensuality, with a chromatic freshness that seems to update the legacy of the gallant painting of Watteau and Fragonard. He excelled in female portraiture, as is evident in this painting of a young woman captured in a jovial, uninhibited expression. Her pink satin dress adorned with a tulle neckline, together with the velvet gloves and pleated cap, suggest a festive atmosphere, which is emphasised by the black mask on her skirt. Here we can see the perfection of a drawing that is subjected to a luminous colouring, rich in sunny tones. A painter, writer and goldsmith, Francisco Masriera cultivated the genre of portraiture and orientalist painting, and is now considered one of the best portraitists who followed in Fortuny's footsteps. The son of the prestigious goldsmith José Masriera Vidal and brother of the painters José and Luis Masriera, Francisco began his artistic training under his father's guidance in the family jewellery workshop and with the painter José Serra Porson. He then travelled to Geneva to learn the technique of enamelling, although he gradually turned to painting, specialising in portraits. Around 1865 he moved to Paris, where he attended Alexandre Cabanel's studio and devoted himself to copying the great masters of the Louvre. He subsequently travelled to Rome, where he began to paint Orientalist canvases. As a writer and columnist he contributed to the magazine "El Recuerdo". Francisco Masriera took part in the Universal Exhibitions in Paris in 1867, 1878 and 1889, and was awarded a third-class medal at the latter. At the National Fine Arts Exhibition in Madrid in 1878 he was awarded a second medal for the work entitled "La esclava" ("The Slave"), which was finally acquired by King Alfonso XII. As it can be appreciated in this work, Masriera put special interest in the female figure, deepening in the eroticism and in the emotional strength of his portraits, which he used to represent in sumptuously ornamented environments and dressed with rich dresses, headdresses and jewels. The present painting depicts a classical interior that is rigorously documented in terms of architecture, clothing and furnishings. The scene, clearly inspired by Pompeii, presents a marine view whose landscape can be directly related to the beach of Meta in Sorrento. A Spanish painter, writer and goldsmith, he is considered one of the best Catalan portraitists, following in the footsteps of Fortuny. He began his training in the jewellery workshop of his father José María Masriera and in that of José Serra y Porson. Always concerned with improving and exploring new horizons, he refined his technique after travelling to Geneva, where he learned the enamelling process, which would become one of the main hallmarks of his goldsmith designs. As for his work as a painter, it is recorded that he travelled to Paris for the first time in 1865, where he visited Cabanel's studio. He visited the French capital, the epicentre of the artistic modernity of the time, on several occasions, where he acquired first-hand the rapid brushstrokes, luminosity and vivid chromaticism of the early Impressionists, traits that can be seen in this magnificent painting. As can also be seen in the work presented here, Masriera had the ability to combine the freshness of the new plastic trends emerging in Paris at the time with the long neoclassical tradition marked by the Academy: a painstaking dedication to drawing, attention to composition and the rigorous study of the old masters. In fact, there is evidence that at the Louvre he devoted himself to copying the main works in order to acquire the mastery of the classics, and in Paris he took part in the Universal Exhibitions of 1867, 1878 and 1889. There is also evidence of his trips to Rome, where he began to paint Orientalist canvases. As a writer and columnist he contributed to the magazine El Recuerdo. In Spain he was awarded the second medal at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts in 1878 for his work entitled La esclava ("The Slave"), and also exhibited his works at the Galería Bosch in Madrid in 1882 and at the Sala Parés in Barcelona in 1889. As can be seen in this exquisite painting, Masriera's technique is characterised by the perfection of the drawing, the careful composition and a colouring full of strength and luminosity, which is particularly evident in the iridescence of the canvases. He stood out for his fantasy-filled preciousness, as well as for the freshness of his colours.
