CARLOS MASIDE (San Xulián, Pontecesures, 1897-1958). "Galician pilgrimage". Ink, watercolor and gouache on paper. Presents faults in the frame.

    Est: €3,000 - €3,200

CARLOS MASIDE (San Xulián, Pontecesures, 1897-1958). "Galician pilgrimage". Ink, watercolour and gouache on paper. There are faults in the frame. Measurements: 38 x 27 cm; 55 x 42 cm (frame). He began his drawing studies in the town of Padrón. In 1917 he travelled to Madrid, to do his military service, and there he came into contact with artists, who guided his future career. In 1923 he took part in the Regional Exhibition in A Coruña. Two years later he collaborated in the newspapers Faro de Vigo and El Pueblo Gallego, the latter no longer in existence. The Provincial Council of Pontevedra awarded him a grant at the end of 1926 to travel to Paris, where he stayed for some time and got to know the artistic avant-gardes of the interwar period. On his return to Spain, during the years of the Republic, he spent some time in Madrid and Galicia, specifically in Compostela and Vigo, where he did industrial work and joined intellectual gatherings chaired by Valle Inclán and García Lorca. He held his first personal exhibition in Compostela in 1930. He subsequently held exhibitions in Vigo and other Galician cities. The Civil War was a hard time for Maside, who was linked to Republican groups. After the end of the war, he lived in Compostela, where he remained until his death, surrounded by young intellectuals, on whom this intellectualised, theorising painter exerted an obvious influence. Carlos Maside's work can be found in all the museums of Galicia, especially in the museum of Vigo, with a large and highly representative collection of his oil paintings and gouaches. The museum founded in Sada by Luis Seoane y Díaz Pardo bears his name, in recognition of the influence that Maside had on the new artistic currents in Galicia, until then practically confined to figuration and folklorism. Maside was not a great painter, because he was not technically gifted. He is, however, a great draughtsman, and a serious, conscientious plastic vocation that led him to produce, more with reason than with inspiration, paintings of vague cubist or expressionist ancestry, because the German modes of the interwar period influenced him, and it would suffice to mention the banners of the groups "El Puente" or "El caballo azul" (The Bridge or The Blue Horse). Franz Marc, for example, is very evident in him. Starting from the prevailing folklorism, Maside gives a plastic dimension to anecdotal themes, striving for a structured, baroque and at the same time geometrical composition, with an unquestionable personality. Market scenes, scenes of sewing or housework, he repeats them with minimal variations, arranging the elements very well and with a warm palette in which reds, blues and yellows dominate. Sometimes he silhouettes the figures so that the subject matter is recreated and impastoed, painted directly with the brush on a brief, confident drawing. He was an excellent engraver in various techniques, because, in the end, no form of artistic expression, even caricature and the "foot" joke, was alien to him.
